North Harford Road

More spacious homes, but city road noise is still a concern
Although it is not far from downtown Baltimore, North Harford Road feels decidedly more suburban than the rest of the city. A few red brick duplexes, priced between $200,000 and $300,000, can be found on the south side of the neighborhood. For the most part, single-family homes here are detached, sitting on spacious city lots with front and backyards. “The further northeast you get, the bigger the homes,” Chong says. These cottage-style houses, many with Cape Cod and Craftsman features, are set back from the sidewalks by concrete walkways and short brick porches. Prices can range anywhere from $290,000 to $400,000 depending on the square footage and the number of bedrooms. However, despite its suburban appearance, reminders of city life still surround the neighborhood. “The traffic on Harford Road gets heavy,” Chong says. “There are so many cars driving by the houses, so it can get pretty noisy. That’s the number one concern I hear from buyers.”Zeke’s Coffee and shopping destinations around Harford Road
Locals can purchase fresh crabs and fish from Harford Seafood Market or just stop in to grab lunch at the fried seafood counter. Harford Mart is a convenience store where folks can quickly pick up snacks, and Giant Food on Parkville Avenue is the closest supermarket. Harford Road serves as the area’s de facto Main Street. Residents can head 2 miles south to grab a cup of coffee at Zeke’s, Baltimore’s favorite home-grown coffee shop, or have dinner at Koco’s Pub, where the crabcakes have been deemed the best in the city by the Maryland Crab Cake Festival. More extensive shopping options are available at White Marsh Mall. “White Marsh is further north and east, and it gets lots of traffic from shoppers,” Chong says. “So it’s still a popular destination, at least. It’s only 5 or so miles away, but it can take way longer to get there than you’d expect.” The mall itself hosts over 130 shops, restaurants and boutiques. Shoppers can also hop across Honeygo Boulevard to The Avenue, a trendy outdoor strip mall that is home to several casual eateries and the AMC movie theater.City public schools and storied private institutions
North Harford Road is zoned for Woodhome Elementary Middle School, which scores a C-minus from Niche and educates children from kindergarten through grade 8. Woodhome is an intensive literacy site, meaning a site-based coach is available to help students improve their reading levels. After middle school, students proceed to their choice of the city’s high schools. The closest is Reginald F. Lewis High, also a C-minus, which offers career and technical education pathways in law, business management and agriculture sciences. Calvert Hall College High School is a private, faith-based alternative for young men located in nearby Towson. Mercy High School, located just 3 miles west on Northern Parkway, has offered the same alternative for young women since it was established in 1960.Plenty of ways to get outside are within reach of North Harford Road
North Harford Park is the closest community green space. Youth sports leagues play on the multipurpose athletic field here, and pickup basketball games on the outdoor court are a regular occurrence. Hikers can head to either Double Rock Park in the northeastern corner of the neighborhood or to Cromwell Valley Park 6 miles north. The 1,600-acre Loch Raven Reservoir, a popular spot for boating and fishing, is also nearby. Golfers will enjoy proximity to Mount Pleasant Golf Course, which opened in 1934 and once hosted Arnold Palmer.Harford Road makes area highways all the more accessible
Harford Road is the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, providing the most direct route to downtown Baltimore 7 miles south. Bus lines along this road run into the heart of the city every 30 minutes, making commuting simple even without a car. Interstate 695, also known as the Baltimore Beltway, is just on the other side of Parkville, granting access to other major highways such as Interstate 95 and Interstate 83. Interstate 95 is the quickest way to make the 25-mile trip to Baltimore Washington International Airport.College football in the county seat, concerts and baseball downtown
North Harford Road is just under 5 miles from Towson, which is the county seat of Baltimore County and home of Towson University. College football games here are a rowdy Saturday tradition. The university also hosts concerts and stand-up comedians throughout the year. Hampden, Baltimore’s famously quirky arts district, is about 7 miles from the neighborhood. Bars in this part of town routinely feature live music by local musicians, and the homeowners on 34th Street open their intricately-decorated houses for visitors to tour during the annual Miracle on 34th Street festival. Residents of North Harford Road are also just 9 miles from Camden Yards, home of the Baltimore Orioles, and M&T Bank Stadium, home of the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens.
