If you’re looking for a home in a centrally located, well-established Detroit community, Winship might be the perfect place to settle down. It’s also where you'll find several sought-after magnet schools and Detroit Medical Center's Sinai-Grace Hospital, one of the largest in the city. “It’s one of those neighborhoods that has stood the test of time. You’ve got a broad mix of people that have lived there for many years, retirees and first-time homeowners. There’s a strong sense of community,” says Realtor Charles Ryan of Keller Williams, who has lived and worked in Detroit for over two decades.
Winship
Homes
Take a stroll through this residential district and you’ll see streets lined with sidewalks, manicured front lawns and mature trees. There are a mix of smaller homes here, including Colonial Revival style homes, cozy cottages, modest bungalows, low-flung ranch homes and some duplexes and multi-family dwellings. Lot sizes are typically on the smaller side, but you’ll still have plenty of room for landscaping, gardening and backyard barbecuing. Many of today's owners have lovingly maintained these homes over the years, making thoughtful upgrades while retaining the home's original charm. Prices typically range from around $70,000 to $200,000. “These homes are solidly built and affordable,” Ryan says.
Parks
Winship’s leafy streets also include several neighborhood parks where residents can relax and enjoy the outdoors. Peterson Playfield Park is a 17-acre green space nestled amid residential streets with playgrounds, athletic fields, walking paths and sport courts. At the opposite end of the neighborhood is Diack Park, a small park with a playground, a walking loop and grassy fields for picnicking. Nearby, you can also take the kids to Bale Playground, a lovely open space surrounded by homes featuring a playground and walking paths.
Schools
Students can attend Bow Elementary-Middle School and Ford High School, both of which hold C-minus ratings from Niche, an online school review site. For an alternative, you might consider two magnet schools within the neighborhood, including Renaissance High School, a sought-after public school that holds a B-rating from Niche. Students interested in exploring other cultures might want to check out the Foreign Language Immersion and Cultural Studies School, a K-8 public school. It offers one of the only immersion programs in Michigan for elementary and middle school students.
Shopping and Dining
Shopping and dining can be found on McNichols Road, a major local throughfare that traverses the southern edge of the community. Southern Smokehouse is a great spot for soul food staples like fried chicken and collard greens, while those in the mood for a cocktail can grab a seat at Teresa’s Place. If you’re looking for a classic Coney Island hotdog with the works, put in your order at Olympia Coney Island or L Goerge’s Coney Island. For the necessities, there’s a Family Dollar and a Dollar General, but you’ll have to hop in your car and drive to get to big box stores and grocers like Walmart, Target, Meijer and The Home Depot.
Transportation
The neighborhood’s proximity to major roadways and local bus stops makes it easy to get around. Hop on U.S. Route 10, and it’s about 15 minutes to downtown Detroit. With well-maintained homes, parks and nearby schools, Winship is a cozy community near all Detroit has to offer.
