20th-century condos and stately southern homes
Properties in Cherokee Seneca were mostly built in the early 20th century and run the gamut from high-rise condos to stately single-family homes. Condo units are usually priced between $180,000 and $400,000, while the bungalows that line the neighborhood’s tightly gridded streets cost around $500,000. Larger, traditional homes are set back on forested streets and boast large, well-landscaped lots — the Georgian, Tudor Revival and Greek Revival properties cost between $900,000 and $1.5 million.Asian-inspired tacos from Dragon King’s Daughter
Cherokee Seneca is primarily residential, but numerous eateries line Bardstown Road at the neighborhood’s southern border. Locals can start their day on a positive note at the Purrfect Day Cat Café, where they can watch kittens play while sipping a latte. For dinner, residents can head to Dragon King’s Daughter, an Asian fusion restaurant serving creative takes on tacos and sushi. “Louisville is known for its bourbon, so you’ll see a lot of people gathering at local breweries,” Wardrip says. Nearby, locals can congregate at the Pivot Brewing Company and the Against the Grain Brewery and Public House. Kroger is nearby for groceries, but residents head downtown to shop for apparel at more unique retailers. The neighborhood’s namesake parks are steps away
Green space and outdoor recreation are steps away, as residents live between two of Louisville’s popular parks. Cherokee Park is west, and Seneca Park is east — Middle Fork Beargrass Creek connects the two community spaces. Cherokee Park is a nearly 400-acre park where residents can unwind after work with a drive through a 2.3-mile scenic loop; the road also has a dedicated space for bikers and joggers to explore the meadows and wooded spaces. Kids enjoy the rustic-themed playground, and escape the humidity on summer days at the “sprayground.” With a nine-hole golf course, fishing pond, archery range and athletic courts, residents can try their hand at a number of outdoor activities. Seneca Park features over 500 acres of green space and includes an 18-hole golf course and a children’s playground A range of athletic courts host soccer and volleyball matches, and locals are often spotted biking or walking their dogs on the paved trails.Gather for local events at Cherokee Park or head to Churchill Downs
Neighborhoods join the greater Louisville community for its popular events. “The Kentucky Derby is huge, and it just keeps getting bigger. Locals usually go on 502’sDay, which is the Tuesday before the big weekend, since it’s more focused on the community,” Wardrip says. Residents will gather for more low-key events as well. Wardrip adds, “there’s a huge Catholic school presence here, and during the summer there will be large picnics pretty much every weekend throughout Louisville.” Residents also head to Cherokee Park for more recurring events, like the Olmsted Parks Beer Garden, where they can explore food trucks and various brews, and community marathons.Attend A-minus-rated Atherton High
Kids are zoned to the Jefferson County Public School system, which offers a school choice program. Parents must apply to obtain their child’s assigned school if they are new to the district, have new kindergartener or have moved in the previous school year. Cherokee Seneca children may attend Bloom Elementary, which has a B rating from Niche, and Highland Middle, which has a C rating. To finish, students can attend Atherton High, which has an A-minus rating and offers media arts, health science and engineering programs that encourage students to explore their career interests. The Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary campus is in the neighborhood as well.Catch the TARC or merge onto city roadways
Bus stops operated by the Transit Authority of River City, or the TARC, are peppered throughout the neighborhood and take locals 6 miles northwest to Downtown Louisville. Residents can also merge onto major roadways to travel throughout Louisville, as State Route 150 creates the neighborhood’s southern border, and Interstate 65 runs along Cherokee Seneca’s northern edge. For longer trips, the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport is 7 miles southwest, though residents may see private and commercial planes fly overhead too, as Bowman Field is south of Seneca Park.
