Suburban living close to Louisville attractions

The deep roar of a lion is usually a cause for alarm, but those living in Hayfield Dundee are used to being "Close enough to the Louisville Zoo that you can hear the lions roaring on a quiet day," says Jackie Wilson, a local agent with Real Estate Go To. The zoo is just one of several nearby amenities that add to Hayfield Dundee's family-friendly atmosphere. Students can walk to school at the highly-rated Atherton High School or take a short bike ride to get to The Highlands, a district along Bardstown Road that's known for its selection of lively eateries and mom-and-pop shops. "Most locals would consider the neighborhood to also be part of The Highlands, but homes here tend to be more affordable," says Wilson. Just 6 miles from the heart of Kentucky's largest city, Hayfield Dundee combines a laid-back suburban vibe with proximity to some of the area's most popular attractions.

Diverse midcentury housing in a green neighborhood

With quiet residential streets and generous lots that often back up to naturally wooded areas, “Residents in Hayfield Dundee really enjoy the beautiful trees and walkability that their neighborhood offers,” says Chris Allen, Owner and Realtor of Rainey Allen Shaw Realtors. Most properties have quarter to half-acre lawns that allow for flower beds and landscaping, though larger properties with up to 8 acres can also be found in the neighborhood. Homes here were mostly built in the mid-20th century, and feature a range of ranch-style, traditional and Classical Revival designs. Selling from about $300,000 to $750,000, buyers are as likely to encounter brick-sided ramblers with 1500 square feet as they are larger estate homes with 3,500 square feet and columns lining their facades. For something smaller, traditional brick townhouses and condos can also be found selling from about $150,000 to $250,000.

Walk to nearby Jefferson County public schools

Students living in Hayfield Dundee attend school nearby at Hawthorne Elementary, which earns a B-minus rating, before moving on to Highland Middle, which receives a C rating. Atherton High, which has an overall A- rating on Niche, is also located right in the middle of the neighborhood. Cut-throughs connect straight from Hayfield Dundee's residential streets to the school's ballfields, making the walk shorter. Atherton's Academies of Louisville program helps expose students to careers in the media arts, health science and engineering through internships and job opportunities. Graduates can also continue their education at Bellarmine University, a private Catholic institution located just a mile away on Newburg Road. "It's a good school though, and hard to get into," says Wilson, explaining that the school "Fits right into the the neighborhood and has a beautiful campus."

Explore shopping and dining in The Highlands

Residents also don't have to travel far to find places to eat or shop with Bardstown Road located just a mile from the neighborhood. One of the area's most popular destinations for shopping and dining, "You always see people walking, eating in restaurants or sitting at coffee shops," says Wilson. Those strolling along the busy thoroughfare can stop in at thrift stores like the Vintage Banana, peruse artwork at Edenside Gallery or pick up groceries from Kroger. For something to eat, one popular option is Havana Rumba, which serves up large portions of Cuban cuisine like Fricase de Pollo. Once a hangout spot for sports betting and bootlegging, Jack Fry's is another local favorite that was first opened in 1933 and continues to serve high-end southern fare like shrimp and grits or soft shell crab. For more options, Mid City Mall is right on Bardstown Road as well and is home to shows at The Caravan Comedy Club and movies at Baxter Avenue Theatres.

Bike to local greenery at Cherokee Park

In terms of getting outside, Hayfield Dundee is surrounded by a variety of options. One of the closest is the Jim King Trail, a paved path leading straight from the neighborhood's sidewalks through local woods and along Beargrass Creek. The trail also connects to Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve, which features 41 acres of wooded area and a nature center where families can learn about their urban forest environment. The Louisville Zoo is also immediately west of the neighborhood, so memorable animals like gorillas, lions and giraffes are always just down the street. For young visitors, the zoo also offers two playgrounds and a nautically-themed splash park. One of Louisville's largest parks, Cherokee Park, is also just under 2 miles north of the neighborhood. In addition to sports facilities like a golf course and basketball courts, the 2-mile “Scenic Loop” allows visitors to get some exercise while looking out over nearly 400 acres of hilly woodlands and meadows.

Join in on the Joe Creason Parkrun

For a fun local event, residents can lace up their running shoes and head to Joe Creason Park for the weekly park run, which occurs every Saturday morning at 9 a.m. Participants can walk, jog or aim for a personal best while running along a paved trail forming a "figure eight" through the park. Free and open to the public, this event is made possible by a host of local volunteers and is part of an effort to bring the community closer together. After the run, the group also heads out for coffee at a local café and invites anyone to join.

Getting around the Hayfield Dundee area
