Surfers will often say they are hunting for “pura vida.” Translating to “pure life,” the phrase, common to Costa Rica, means things are good, but for some, it holds a more spiritual connotation about finding a consistent connection between life on the waves and life on land.
The home at 1421 N Atlantic Ave. in New Smyrna Beach was built to foster that connection. The half-acre property has four bedrooms, five bathrooms, a $4 million price tag, and a direct line to the beach.
It also has a past owner who embraced the connection between shelter, sand and surf.

Agent Ignacio Barsottelli of Collado Real Estate has the listing.
The property sits on Volusia County’s southern barrier island. “Every night, we’d fall asleep to that steady rhythm [of the waves],” one of the owners said in an emailed statement.
While the home fronts 100 feet of beach, it is less than two miles from Smyrna Dunes Park, a stunning 184-acre site featuring a 2.4-mile boardwalk.
The three-car garage contains racks for up to five surfboards, and the home features an outdoor shower, a holdover from its previous surfing owner.
“He built his life around the tides,” the current owner said.

The 2,194-square-foot main house, which spans three floors, brings this ocean connection inside. Touches such as the dining room’s seaweed-shaped chandelier maintain the nautical theme. The stone and wood used throughout—such as the bamboo kitchen cabinetry—create an organic flow.
The property includes a two-story guest house, separated by a walled courtyard with a heated in-ground pool surrounded by Spanish tile.
The owner called it a sanctuary. “You can forget the rest of the world even exists,” he said.

The North Beach neighborhood, only a few minutes south of Daytona Beach, also helps shut out outside noise. "Residents of this Intracoastal community can have views of the Halifax River waterway and the currents of the Atlantic Ocean while avoiding the hustle and bustle of the neighboring beachfront communities’ nightlife," reads the neighborhood description on Homes.com.
Yet the home’s expansive windows offer endless views of the natural world. The primary suite, which includes a 9-by-26-foot bath/dressing room, features a fireplace and a sitting area for watching the waves.
“It felt like we were in a five-star resort, but it was just home,” the owner said.
