Why Live in West Mesa
West Mesa is a mostly residential neighborhood near the west bank of the Rio Grande. It’s home to two neighborhood schools, several local restaurants on busy commercial streets and a community center. “Everyone is close-knit,” says Raquel Cordova, the recreation center supervisor for West Mesa Community Center. “We have our regulars who come in. We have community garage sales, and we have a lot of neighborhood associations and homeowners associations that come around too. They kind of all know each other, and they come out for all the big events.” The West Mesa Community Center is in the middle of the neighborhood, with open pickleball and basketball courts, a variety of classes and childcare. “It’s really affordable, so parents utilize us a lot,” Cordova says. “It’s only $10 for childcare for the whole school year, and we transport kids to and from school with our city vehicles.” Staff accompany children to both Lavaland Elementary and John Adams Middle, though childcare programming is open to families across the city.
