Why Live in Benton Harbor

On the banks of Lake Michigan, 50 miles from Kalamazoo, is Benton Harbor. A major port city, Benton Harbor developed during the latter half of the 19th century with the installation of a 50-foot-wide canal. Steamboats full of peaches left for Chicago daily, and as a result, theaters, sit-down restaurants and general stores sprung up around Main Street to meet the needs of the many dock and factory workers that now called this port city home. Between 1880 and 1900, Benton Harbor’s population more than quadrupled and the city was officially incorporated in 1891. After a period of economic instability in the 1970s and ‘80s, and unsafe drinking water conditions due to lead poisoning in 2018, populations declined. Many of the Victorian buildings that once housed general stores and taverns were abandoned, and today, less than 10,000 people call this city home.
