Love to Travel by Bike? Here Are the Best Cities to Move To
Whether you enjoy cycling for regular, high-intensity exercise, or you just like to go for a leisurely ride on a sunny day with the kids, or even if you commute to work by bicycle, then you rely on the bike-friendliness of your city or town to help keep you safe and make sure that your ride is as pleasant as possible.
Many cities have recently made significant investments in making their streets and pathways safer places to ride. With that in mind, these are the current ten bike-friendliest cities in the United States (in no particular order!).

-
Minneapolis, Minnesota
Though Minneapolis may be known for the harshness of its winter climate, once the snow and ice melts and spring gets under way, the city seems to sprout bicycles along with its spring flowers. With over 120 miles of dedicated bikeways, bike lanes, and bike and pedestrian-only bridges, not to mention the city’s bike sharing program, there is much that other cities could learn from the bastion of the frozen North.
-
Portland, Oregon
This is probably the least surprising city on the list, as Portland has a well-established reputation as a bike utopia. Partially due to the mildness of its year-round climate, Portland boasts the largest amount of cyclists per capita of any city in the United States.
-
Tucson, Arizona
A city that you may not automatically think of when you think “bike-friendly,” Tucson has more than 700 miles of bikeways. That seemingly large number just so happens to represent the most bike infrastructure of any city in North America.
-
Washington, D.C.
Washington D.C. may not be able to boast the highest amount of cycling commuters of any city in the U.S., but what the locals may not take advantage of, tourists are more than eager to. Bicycle rentals are big business in this town, and rumor has it that cycling is the easiest way to see all the major monuments and sites, without a hassle.

-
San Francisco, California
Given its reputation as one of the hilliest cities in the country, it may be surprising to see San Francisco on this list. But the current cycling boom in City by the Bay is testament to what can happen when a city government takes steps to improve cycling infrastructure and invest in cycling culture.
-
Chicago, Illinois
Another city undergoing a bicycling renaissance, Chicago is currently putting in miles and miles of dedicated cycling lanes. By 2020, the city will have more than 600 miles of bike trails, paths, and lanes installed.
-
Boulder, Colorado
The city that can boast about having more than three-hundred sunny days a year, can also boast having one of the best, most-accessible bike sharing programs in the world. Welcome to Boulder, CO, cycling enthusiasts: you’re going to love it here.
-
New York, New York
New York City may not seem like everyone’s idea of a cycling paradise, but with the country’s biggest bike sharing program (6,000 bikes), and hundreds of miles of bike lanes throughout the city, the Big Apple is getting its act together.
-
Austin, Texas
The city of Austin actually has a bike zoo. It also has the Lance Armstrong Bikeway. Enough said.
-
Missoula, Montana
People on bikes may not be the first image that comes to mind when you think of Montana. But with bike lanes on nearly every major street, and a large bike commuting culture (driven mainly by the University), Missoula makes the grade.
