Evergreen is known as the “Emerald City” for its natural beauty, and in 2017, the city council passed a tongue-in-cheek resolution naming the community the “Bigfoot Capital of Alabama” after a stretch of reported sightings. But the region’s real crown jewel is not its trees or a mythic creature, but a sausage. The city has been the home of Conecuh Sausage since 1947, with a processing plant and a retail store that lets visitors sample the hickory-smoked delicacy. It hosts a festival dedicated to the meat each year. When not operating the grill, residents spent time together at the area’s parks, businesses and restaurants. “It’s a small town with a big heart,” says Susan Coleman, an agent with Outlaw Realty and an Evergreen resident. “It’s a strong community. There is so much local support.” Most residents live near the city center in midcentury houses, with a smattering of homes across the larger rural region.
