A quiet community embodying Lexington’s love of horses and bourbon
Despite its long history and booming industries, Lexington, Kentucky, is a laidback city. “Lexington isn’t trying to be anything it’s not,” says resident Judy Stuber. “It’s very traditional but very forward-thinking because of the university. I’ve never seen a city so comfortable in its own skin. It’s under the radar, and people like it that way.” The city does, however, pride itself on two things: horses and bourbon. Sandwiched between the world’s largest Thoroughbred auction house and the city’s growing Distillery District, West Lexington is a quiet residential community offering convenient access to both enterprises. Considered an older part of the city – West Lexington was in fact the site of the area’s first settlement. Today this neighborhood is filled with single-family homes, apartments, grocery stores, parks and local restaurants too. New Circle Road, the main loop around Lexington, borders the neighborhood, and offers convenient access in and around the city.

Midcentury ranch-style to 2000s new traditional homes
Most housing within West Lexington belongs to smaller subdivisions – like Gardenside, West Gardenside and Headley Green, to name a few. Prices and housing options vary by subdivision, but overall the neighborhood offers a diverse mix of apartments and single-family homes to choose from. “West Lexington has a wide range from midcentury builds to the more modern 2000s designs,” says Realtor Andrea Coughtry. “You can get everything from larger homes all the way down to small, 1500-square-foot ranch-style homes.” Average prices in West Lexington hover from around $200,000 to $450,000, with the exceptions being properties located within the Saddle Club, The Colony and Calumet subdivisions. These areas consist primarily of large newly constructed homes with ample yard spaces - and as such, price tags can reach into the low millions. Midcentury brick ranch-styles and split-level homes are the most common designs, as are ‘90s and 2000s New Traditional style homes. The market moves quickly here, with homes selling after an average of 16 days, far less than the national average of 42 days. "If it's priced right, it sells today or tomorrow,” says Headley Green HOA president, Joe Riddell. His subdivision has lots of longtime homeowners, “People love it here. It’s the quietest neighborhood you’d ever want to see,” Riddell says. When he moved in about 20 years ago, most residents were the home’s original owners. Today, many still live there. “They’re only leaving here when the Good Lord calls them home," says Riddell. West Lexington has a 6 out of 10 CAP Index crime score, which is slightly above the national average of 4. In Riddell’s cul-de-sac, everybody turns their lights on at night and off in the morning, a sign to one another that they're home and doing well.

Dining along Alexandria Drive and shopping at the Fayette Mall
Most of West Lexington’s shopping and dining options can be found along Alexandria Drive. "Kroger, Walmart, Meijers, it's all close by,” Riddell says. “We have everything you want, all within a 10-minute drive." Alexandria’s north end has a Super Mercado Aguascalientes for groceries, local restaurants like Tortilleria y Taqueria Ramirez and Clamatos Restaurante for a bite to eat. Fast-food chains like McDonald’s and Taco Bell are also here for meals on the-go. Further south, Kroger sits across the street from Mexican grocery store Mi Preferida and Yogikrupa Indian Grocers. Next door there is a Dollar General and the Everest Nepalese & Indian Cuisine restaurant. Five miles southeast, the Fayette Mall is Kentucky’s largest shopping center with nearly 200 retailers.

Try craft brews and local bourbon in the Distillery District
On the neighborhood’s north end, Old Frankfort Pike turns into Manchester Street as it heads east towards downtown. “Manchester Street is an old industrial block that was recently converted into some of the newest nighttime entertainment,” Coughtry says. “It’s a mix between the hippie, local, barefoot brewery style and the brand-new Manchester Hotel, which has a rooftop bar and looks like it was dropped out of New York City.” Manchester Street is also known as the Distillery District because it’s home to several of the city’s distilleries and breweries, which also typically have cocktail bars or tasting rooms. Despite being known for its nightlife, this area also features family-friendly spots like Goodfellas Pizzeria and Crank & Boom Craft Ice Cream. “Crank & Boom is one of the best ice cream places I’ve ever been to,” Stuber says. After dessert, Coughtry recommends catching live music at the Manchester Music Hall, trying craft brews at Ethereal Brewing or playing arcade games at The Burl. “Everyone goes to Manchester at night,” she says. “It has a little bit of everything for everyone.”

Thoroughbred races at Keeneland
Four miles west, the famous Thoroughbred racecourse, Keeneland, is one of the city’s top attractions. In 2009, it was ranked as the no. 1 thoroughbred racetrack in North America by the Horseplayers Association of North America and it operates the world’s largest Thoroughbred auction house. “If you’re a horse lover, there are so many opportunities,” Stuber says. “You can see the workouts at Keeneland every day.” Free to visit, folks can observe the horses' morning workouts from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. 365 days a year. The course also hosts racing seasons each fall and spring, which attracts visitors from across the globe to watch some first-class horse racing. Race tickets start at $7 on weekdays and $10 on weekends.

Wolf Run and McConnell Springs Park
West Lexington has pocket parks located throughout the neighborhood, several of which – Valley Park, Wolf Run Park and Gardenside Park – back up to Wolf Run, a stream that traverses the west side of Lexington. The neighborhood’s largest park is McConnell Springs, a 26-acre green space where William McConnell established Lexington’s first settlement in 1779. Today, it offers 2 miles of trails alongside natural springs and hosts educational and recreational events for all ages throughout the year.

New Circle Road and the Lextran bus
West Lexington is a large, car-dependent neighborhood on the west side of the city. New Circle Road – the main loop around Lexington – borders the neighborhood, connecting it to the rest of the city. “There’s a lot to do in Lexington, but it’s kind of spread out,” Stuber says. “I think the traffic is getting a little worse around New Circle. You can tell by the traffic how many people have moved to Lexington.” Cars are necessary to run most errands in this part of town, but the Lextran bus has plenty of stops in the neighborhood for those who prefer not to drive. "The centralized location in this part of Fayette County is so vital to people," Riddell says. When he and his wife decided to move here, the proximity to hospitals was a particular draw. Nearby facilities include CHI St. Joseph Health, Baptist Health Lexington and the Albert B. Chandler Hospital. The Blue Grass Airport is just 3 miles west, making out-of-town travel convenient.
