Located less than 3 miles from the heart of Akron, North Hill is known for its international community and welcoming nature. “When you get into the North Hill area of Akron, it’s very ethnically diverse, and for years, it was a very high Italian-immigrated area,” says Steve Mosholder of Mosholder Realty, a broker and owner specializing in Akron and living in nearby Tallmadge. “Now, there’s a very large Burmese population.” The demographics continue to diversify as refugees and immigrants put down roots in North Hill, and the neighborhood’s events and community spaces reflect the respect for different heritages. Surrounded by parks and green spaces, North Hill allows residents to embrace their history while enjoying the beauty of Northeast Ohio.

Authentic eateries dating back to the 1930s
The shops and restaurants of North Hill reflect its cultural diversity, with ethnic supermarkets and eateries from across the globe near Cuyahoga Falls Avenue. Establishments like Dontino’s La Vita Gardens and DeVitis Italian Market have been Italian staples since the mid-20th century, but other options in the neighborhood range from Nepalese restaurants to Asian markets. Locals can head about 4 miles northwest to Chapel Hill for national stores like Aldi and Target.

Annual festivals and the Exchange House
The cultural background of residents takes center stage in the neighborhood, and community leaders strive to preserve North Hill’s reputation as a welcoming place for refugees. As Mosholder says, “People come to North Hill for the comfort of their culture.” North Hill Music Festival highlights the music, food and traditions of South Asian residents each year, and the Feast of Stefano Del Lupo showcases Italian heritage with Morra tournaments and plenty of cannoli and cavatelli at Carovillese Club Pavilion. The International Institute of Akron collaborates with the North Hill Community Development Corporation to operate the Exchange House, which helps house refugees who haven’t settled in the area.

Century-old homes near Cuyahoga Falls Avenue
Because Akron saw its boom in the early 20th century, many North Hill houses date back to the 1910s and 1920s. Brick streets, like Collinwood Avenue, add to the throw-back charm of the neighborhood, as do the mature trees along the road’s edge. Well-worn sidewalks connect homes to the ethnic grocers and diverse restaurants of Cuyahoga Falls Avenue, and evenly sized properties offer a uniform look to the community. Houses under $75,000 require a bit of renovation, but colonial-style homes start under $100,000 and extend up to $180,000. The occasional ranch-style home has a similar price point, but this architecture reflects development after the 1950s.
A neighborhood surrounded by Metro Parks
Surrounded by Cascade Valley Metro Park and Gorge Metro Park, North Hill invites residents to hike along the Cuyahoga River and gaze at it from scenic overlooks. Within the community, multiple parks have undergone, and continue to undergo, renovation. Patterson Park Community Center now offers youth basketball programs and senior social groups, and Waters Park features pickleball courts. Each Wednesday evening, the local farmers market occurs across the street from the community center from July through September. When winter weather hits, North Hill Branch Library sits along East Cuyahoga Falls Avenue, making it easy to get cozy with a book during January's 30-degree, snowy days.
