Goodyear Tire roots
While Akron, Ohio, may not be the Rubber Capital of the World that it once was, it’s still known for tires, mainly because it’s home to the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, which is still one of the largest employers in the area. The centerpiece of the Northwest Akron neighborhood is the Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, a Tudor Revival home built in the 1910s that was home to F.A. Seiberling, the co-founder of Goodyear. “The homes surrounding the mansion are pretty much smaller versions,” says Bill Lowery, a Realtor with eXp Realty. “The original homes were built for Goodyear workers and are still in great shape.” Adding to the neighborhood's beauty, there is a 1,000-acre Metro Park in the northern part of the neighborhood and a country club in the southern portion. Even though the neighborhood is 30 miles south of Cleveland, most people there work in Akron. “This is not usually a target area for someone working in an office in Cleveland five days a week,” he adds. In addition to Goodyear employing a couple thousand, hospitals and the University of Akron are also significant employers.

Wide range of home prices in Northwest Akron
The majestic Tudor and Colonial Revival houses near the Hywet mansion are on the high end of the price scale in Northwest Akron. They range between $470,000 and $800,000, with lots up to 2 acres and four to six bedrooms. Most of those homes were built in the 1920s, shortly after the construction of the Hywet estate. The most recently constructed homes are from the 1970s. “This neighborhood was planned out well, with not much spare land,” Lowery says. “A house would have to burn down to see a more contemporary house built here.” Homes on the lower end of the scale range from $130,000 to $410,000, with split-level and Cape Cod styles being the most prominent. Condos sell between $100,000 and $200,000. Houses of worship in the neighborhood include St. Paul’s Episcopal, First Baptist Church of Akron, St. Joseph Melkite Catholic and Christ Woodland United Methodist Church.

The park is enjoyed throughout the year, as many trails are used for cross-country skiing in the winter. On a much smaller scale, the 8-acre Hardesty Park hosts the Taste of Akron event in late July, a four-hour event featuring live music and area food trucks. Around the same time, the Akron Arts Expo is a weekend event showcasing hundreds of artists' talents. Golfers can enjoy playing at Portage Country Club, which opened in 1894. The BARC–Akron Dog Park is off Memorial Parkway, not far from the Little Cuyahoga River, about 2 miles east of the neighborhood
