Nob Hill
Central Avenue is the center of activity for diners and shoppers
The mile-long strip of Central Avenue that runs through this neighborhood buzzes with things to do, and many homes here are within walking distance. Colorful signage — some of it neon like the two white arches that welcome people to Nob Hill — hail a mix of antique stores, jewelry stores, bookstores, cafes, restaurants and bars. They help make what the Nob Hill Neighborhood Association proclaims “Albuquerque's Most Fabulous Neighborhood.” Dining hotspots include M'tucci's Bar Roma, which is housed in a historic building that was once a Ford dealership and Texaco gas station that opened in 1939. “This building is on the National Register of Historic Buildings,” Dolinski says. “And it’s really good, the food there is awesome.” Little Bear Coffee and Little Bear PM Neighborhood Bar fills a converted garage and offers cocktails, wine and beer in addition to coffee and pastries. “That is a great place for your local caffeine, as well as a great place for business meetings or to just peruse the internet,” Dolinski says. Shoppers can hunt for vintage furniture at a place like Parklife, find their next read at Organic Books or peruse the vinyls at Nob Hill Records. Locals can also spend free time tackling one of the more than 850 games at Empire Board Game Library, a spot that also offers a menu of sandwiches, desserts and coffees. The Historic Lobo Theater & Event Center, which opened in 1938, hosts karaoke nights, comedy shows, and classic movie screenings, including a brunch and a movie series on Sundays. The La Montañita Food Co-op is an organic supermarket option in Central Avenue’s Nob Hill Business Center.Home styles reflect the region
The neighborhood dates to 1916 and most of the houses were built in the early to mid-20th century. Many of these homes have Pueblo, Spanish Colonial or Craftsman styling and floor plans average just over 1,800 square feet. Two sections of Nob Hill north of Central Avenue, Monte Vista and College View, are on the National Register of Historic Places, and many of the homes there have plaques recognizing their historic distinction. Houses here sell for $200,000 to $800,000 largely based on the condition. “Much of this neighborhood has been gentrified and updated, keeping the old-world style and blending modern amenities,” Dolinski says. Central Avenue has modern condos, built within the last 20 years, for $250,000 to $440,000. Also, with a location next to the University of New Mexico, almost half of Nob Hill residents are renters.Concerts, lights and more take over Central Avenue at different points of the year
The abundance of activity along Central Avenue includes multiple community events. The roadway, part of U.S. Route 66, hosts the Route 66 Summerfest in July. Summerfest includes live music on multiple stages, food trucks and other vendors. December brings the Twilight Night Parade, a holiday celebration featuring a couple hundred brightly lit vehicles, marching bands, dance teams and other local groups. Both events attract thousands of people.Local park is receiving a facelift
Morningside Park, on Nob Hill’s south side, is undergoing a renovation project that is expected to be completed in the summer of 2025. The four-space park will receive a new playground, a zipline feature, and lighting. Wellesley Park is another recreation space in the neighborhood, with two purple-and-blue-colored tennis courts that were resurfaced in 2022.Commuters have multiple ways to navigate Nob Hill
Dolinski considers walkability to be one of Nob Hill’s biggest draws. Central Avenue is a particularly walkable stretch, and it’s reasonable for a lot of residents to reach some of the neighborhood’s amenities on foot. Cycling may be quicker for some, and the neighborhood has bike lanes on roads including Lead Avenue and Coal Avenue. The Albuquerque Rapid Transit bus line runs through Nob Hill in dedicated bus lanes on Central Avenue. The Albuquerque International Sunport airport is 3 miles south. Nearby Interstate 25 is a way to reach Sante Fe, New Mexico’s capital, about 65 miles away.Multiple area schools hit A marks
The Albuquerque Public Schools system maintains a B-plus grade on Niche. “Partially it’s from the university, where you’ll have teachers learning through internships and they’ll do a lot of the internships in the areas around there,” Dolinski says of the Albuquerque schools’ stout reputation. “So there’s a higher level of teaching there.” Kids in Nob Hill attend either Monte Vista Elementary or Bandelier Elementary, depending on where they live. Both Monte Vista and Bandelier have A-minus grades on Niche and active PTAs. Students move on to the A-minus-rated Jefferson Middle or C-rated Wilson Middle where they can participate in extracurriculars including basketball, soccer, volleyball, and track and field teams. The neighborhood is zoned for the B-rated Highland High and A-minus-rated Albuquerque High, which both have esports clubs. The University of New Mexico is just about a mile from Nob Hill. With more than 23,000 students in Albuquerque, UNM is the largest college in the state, and the 618-bed UNM Hospital is on its campus.
