A neighborhood close to UNM's North Campus and Nob Hill

Summit Park, which has a community park by the same name, is an Albuquerque neighborhood close to the University of New Mexico's North Campus, which includes the UNM Hospital. It's less than a mile to the trendy retail district Nob Hill, which is off Central Avenue. "Nob Hill tends to be more urban because it's near a busy street. If you extend north and south, it's all considered the 'UNM Area,'" says Kim Kiegel, an associate broker with eXp Realty.

Homes in Summit Park date to the 1940s through the 1970s

Most of Summit Park's homes were built from the 1940s to the '70s. "They have character. The architecture tends to be Pueblo style or sometimes Territorial style," says Kiegel. Pueblo-style homes have stucco walls, flat roofs and timbering. Territorial-style homes have similar exteriors and roofing, but may include Greek Revival features like square columns, pillars and the use of brick. There are also bungalows, split levels and ramblers in the neighborhood. Prices range from the $300,000s to $700,000s. Townhouses off Indian School Road Northeast have hovered in the $200,000s.

The Summit Park Neighborhood Association is an active group

The Summit Park Neighborhood Association (SPNA) is run by a board of directors and welcomes residents to participate in meetings and events. "Summit Park has the best community. It's just a really wonderful community, and we all care about our properties and our neighbors," says Kiegel, who is a resident. "The neighborhood association plans fun events: We have such a great time at Coffee in the Park." Other events include summer and fall block parties, a community wide garage sale and the Jack O Lantern Glow, held at Summit Park.

Community parks in the neighborhood and a golf course at UNM

Northeast, Bataan Memorial Park commemorates WWII veterans, including those who settled in the neighborhood, with a stone memorial. The park also has picnic tables, open space and large shade trees. UNM's North Golf Course has a 9-hole course and daily tee times. It offers discounted rates for UNM students and staff, and other groups.

Family owned restaurants in the neighborhood; grocery stores nearby

Among the family owned restaurants in the neighborhood is Lucky Boy, which serves burgers and Chinese food. The owners have supported the SPNA by donating fortune cookies for the Jack O Lantern Glow. Other spots include Padilla's Mexican Kitchen and Vegos, which specializes in vegan New Mexican cuisine. A Smith's grocery store and Whole Foods Market are east of Carlisle Boulevard Northeast.

Montezuma Elementary, Jefferson Middle and Albuquerque High

Montezuma Elementary School is in the north part of the neighborhood and earns a C-plus grade from Niche. Montezuma joins other Albuquerque public elementary schools in October to participate in Albuquerque Aloft with the Balloon Fiesta Kick-Off event. Montezuma also holds a Fall Festival with carnival games, a pumpkin-decorating contest and activities for the whole family. Jefferson Middle School is at the south end of the neighborhood, and Albuquerque High School is several miles west. Both middle and high schools receive A-minus grades. The Albuquerque Public Schools district also has a variety of magnet schools, with enrollment by application.

The neighborhood has bus stops and is close to two interstates

Summit Park is a walkable neighborhood with a mostly gridded layout, sidewalks and short blocks. The free bus system ABQ Ride has stops on streets like Lomas Boulevard Northeast and Indian School Road Northeast. Interstates 25 and 40 meet a few miles northwest of Summit Park. The Alvarado Transportation Center downtown is about 4 miles away. Commuter rail is available on the Rio Metro New Mexico Rail Runner Express, and Amtrak service is also available. Albuquerque International Sunport, the region's airport, is about 6 miles south of Summit Park.
