A sandy expanse with a new gated community make up Westland North
Westland North lies on the far reaches of Albuquerque, surrounded by the sandy New Mexican desert. While it may be one of the westernmost communities in the city, its proximity to downtown has been one of the main deciding factors for some of the homebuyers Katie Fellure, an associate broker with eXp Realty, has helped. “They all coincidentally worked at the same place, so it was the commute factor. It’s pretty much a straight shot to get on the freeway,” she says. The neighborhood is home to a newly developed gated community that promises to stay secluded on one side. “They can’t build to the north because it’s a protected area,” she says, referring to the Petroglyph National Monument. “So, no one will ever build a new neighborhood to the north.”

Contemporary Southwestern homes in gated Inspiration Peak community
Westland North’s housing market consists entirely of the gated Inspiration subdivision, developed by Pulte Homes. Largely built after 2021, the subdivision has a distinct contemporary Southwest flavor, composed of homes with tile roofs, arched doorways and exposed viga beams. While some homes feature nostalgic Spanish Mission and Pueblo influences, others have flatter, more modern lines. Properties fetch between $400,000 and $630,000, and monthly homeowners association fees range between $70 and $90. A sandy-colored brick wall with two gated entrances surrounds the subdivision.

Inspiration Peak Park, athletic stadiums and 700-year-old petroglyphs
The Petroglyph National Monument borders the neighborhood to the north. One of the largest petroglyph sites on the continent, the national park is home to markings and designs carved by Indigenous peoples and Spanish settlers into volcanic rock between 400 and 700 years ago. Miles of sandy trails meander through the park’s South Point Day Use Area, near the community. “There are some hiking trails, but they’re limited,” Fellure says. “You can’t go wherever you want to go because of the petroglyphs, but you can see some sketches on the rocks along the trails.” Homes in the subdivision are situated around a playground in the meticulously landscaped community park. Just south of the development, the Jennifer Riordan Spark Kindness Regional Sports Complex draws a crowd to its five fully lit, turf baseball diamonds and grandstand seating. The Nusenda track and football field — maintained by the Albuquerque Public Schools district — are both nearby.

Fast-food restaurants and New Mexican cuisine along Arroyo Vista
As drivers follow Arroyo Vista Boulevard south, where it becomes 98th Street, they’ll find a number of fast-food restaurants and other chains, from Whataburger and McDonald’s to Church’s Texas Chicken and Starbucks. Nearby, Tenampa New Mexican Restaurant serves regional staples, like stuffed sopapillas, and a selection of breakfast skillets and burritos. Cafe 66 has a retro Americana feel with its wood-paneled walls and red leather booths — one of which was used in a scene from the show, “Breaking Bad.” The eatery’s menu has a mix of casual American and Mexican dishes. For groceries, two Walmart Neighborhood Markets are between 4 and 5 miles away.
