Bear Brook State Park

Allenstown is also known as the home of the 10,000-acre Bear Brook State Park. A prime recreation place for residents, Bear Brook State Park has campgrounds, a beach area for swimming, Archery Pond for fly-fishing, archery ranges and over 40 miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Campers who camp out by the park’s beach can also rent equipment for canoeing, kayaking and standup paddleboarding at Beaver and Catamount Ponds. Locals can also head to Bridge Park for kayaking or to Volunteers Park to play sports. About 7 miles farther north, Rollins Park serves Concord and nearby residents with a public swimming pool, basketball and tennis courts and an athletic field for baseball or softball games.

Proximity to Concord

Allenstown is about 10 miles east of Concord, and the Concord Hospital is 11 miles northwest via U.S. Route 3. Manchester is approximately 13 miles south through the same highway, and the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport is 21 miles away by New Hampshire Route 28 and Interstate 93. Boston, which is 65 miles south, can be accessed through Interstate 93.

Schools in Allenstown

Students here are zoned for the Allenstown School District, which is part of School Administrative Unit 53 (SAU53). SAU53 serves Allenstown, Chichester, Epsom, Pembroke and Concord with eight public primary and secondary schools. The town had allocated $33 million for the construction of a new school, which features a state-of-the-art gymnasium, a library and art room and a consumer science classroom with three kitchen areas. The new kindergarten through eighth-grade school, Allenstown Community School, opened in May 2024 and has yet to be rated by Niche. Awarded the New Hampshire Secondary School of Excellence in 2023, Pembroke Academy has a C Niche grade and serves high school students from ninth to 12th grade. The high school also collaborates with local collages such as Southern New Hampshire University for students to earn fully accredited and transferable college credit courses.

Shopping and Dining

Shops and restaurants are mostly located along Allenstown Road. Allenstown Country Diner serves hearty comfort food in a rustic, wooden setting. Olympus Pizza, the local pizzeria in neighboring Suncook, has a pool table and occasional music nights. Rite Aid is right next door, and Sully’s, the area grocery store, is across the street. About 9 miles south in Hooksett, Hooksett Village Shops has Shaw’s, big-box stores and more restaurants.

Community events in Allenstown

The town organizes several community events throughout the year, including lighting and décor contests for Halloween and Christmas. The annual townwide yard sale serves both as a social event and a meaningful way to reuse and repurpose. In April, the Allenstown Historical Society hosts a small workshop and exhibit to celebrate and reflect on the town’s history for Allenstown History Day.
