Homebuyers come to Cetronia for convenience and acclaimed schools

Cetronia is a small suburb on the outskirts of Allentown that draws homebuyers with its proximity to major highways and lower property taxes. A mix of 20th-century homes fill the tree-lined streets, and highly rated schools and scenic parks are just minutes away. Despite the busy roads nearby, Cetronia offers a quiet place to call home in the Lehigh Valley.

Midcentury homes with prices from the mid-$200,000s

Driving along the wide, suburban streets of Cetronia, you’ll find ranch-style homes, bungalows, Colonial Revivals and traditional houses. The median build year for the neighborhood is 1955, with some homes dating as far back as the 1800s. Brick and vinyl siding are common throughout the community. Most homes cost between the mid-$200,000s and the upper $500,000s.

Expect to pay lower taxes than in some nearby communities

Property taxes in Cetronia tend to be lower than those in neighboring Allentown. In fact, the total mill rate for South Whitehall Township, which includes Cetronia, is less than half that of Allentown. Here is a more detailed breakdown:

  • Homeowners pay taxes to their township or city, school district and county.
  • South Whitehall Township charges a much lower mill rate than Allentown.
  • The Parkland School District also charges a lower rate than the Allentown School District.
  • The total combined mill rate for South Whitehall Township is about $24 per $1,000 of assessed value, compared to Allentown’s $54.

Local students attend top schools in Parkland district

The Parkland School District is one of the top reasons people move to Cetronia. The highly rated district includes several acclaimed schools, such as Cetronia Elementary School and Parkland High School. The high school offers dual enrollment courses and early college programs through Lehigh Carbon Community College and Seton Hall University.

Outdoor fun ranges from quiet trails to roller coaster rides

Cetronia makes it easy to enjoy the area’s parks and recreation. “Trexler Park is right there, which is a really nice, walkable park,” says Patricia Spitzer, a Realtor at Weichert Realtors – Allentown. “It’s very centrally located.” Trexler Memorial Park is a large green space with walking and biking trails, a small pond and plenty of grassy areas for picnicking or playing. Allentown Municipal Golf Course is also nearby and offers a public par-72 course. Some small pocket parks in the neighborhood have basketball courts and playgrounds. If you’re up for a thrill, you can head to the nearby Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom. “It’s a huge amusement park. Everybody goes. My daughters have season passes to go,” Spitzer says. The park has over 25 rides, including eight roller coasters.

Grocery stores, big-box retailers and local eateries close by

Shopping is also convenient in Cetronia. Wegmans on Tilghman Street covers all your grocery needs, while other stores like Costco and Target are a short drive away on Krocks Road. Chain restaurants like Starbucks, Domino’s and Red Robin are all nearby. Local favorites include P.J. Whelihan’s Pub + Restaurant for a sports bar atmosphere and Grille 3501 for a refined New American vibe.

Drivers can easily reach Allentown, the Lehigh Valley and beyond

Highways and other major roads offer quick commutes throughout the Lehigh Valley and beyond. “It’s kind of situated between the downtown area and Upper Macungie, where there’s a lot of warehousing,” Spitzer says. “It’s also maybe 5 minutes to Route 78 and the Turnpike. The whole area is kind of a bedroom community for New York and Philadelphia, so a lot of people commute to those cities.” Some notable driving distances from Cetronia include:

  • A 4-mile drive to Center City Allentown on Parkway Boulevard
  • A 3-mile trip to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest
  • A 7-mile route to the warehousing and manufacturing hub in Upper Macungie Township
  • A roughly 60-mile commute to Philadelphia via the Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeast Extension
  • A trip of just under 100 miles east on Interstate 78 to New York City
