A welcoming community midway between Allentown and Bethlehem
"People want to maintain this neighborhood and make it an inviting place. I don't think you find that just anywhere," says Stephanie Sigafoos, treasurer of the Midway Manor Community Association, a volunteer neighborhood advocacy group established in the 1950s. "I don't want to leave." This sort of attitude has helped turn Midway Manor into a tight, neighborly community sandwiched between Allentown and Bethlehem in the Lehigh Valley. A mixture of renters and homeowners, the neighborhood is almost exclusively residential but has a wide variety of amenities just outside of the community, with shopping areas, industry and fitness facilities sometimes just across the street.
The Midway Manor Community is a self-contained neighborhood on the border of Allentown.

Larger lots than average for an urban neighborhood
“It's a quaint little subdivision - almost like a town within the city," Sigafoos says. This is reflected in the neat and tidy layout of the neighborhood, which is an irregular grid featuring a mix of Cape Cod and Colonial Revival-style homes set on sidewalk-lined blocks of varying lengths and widths. Most homes feature three or four bedrooms and one or two baths. Many also feature neatly trimmed lawns surrounded by hip-height fencing, helping to keep pets and children contained while still being able to converse with neighbors. Home prices are steady, and almost every home in the neighborhood fetches between $250,000 and $350,000. Sigafoos, who has lived in the community for almost six years, says the neighborhood is in high demand, a fact supported by homes spending only one-third of the national average time on the market. As the community has become more popular, she says some local realtors are knocking on doors asking if homeowners would be interested in selling their property.

Retail and more just outside the community
Midway Manor is a residential neighborhood, almost exclusively homes. That doesn’t mean it’s difficult to get to shopping and dining - the Lehigh Shopping Center next to the neighborhood makes it easy for residents to buy groceries and other essentials, with tenants including Giant, PetSmart, Marshalls, HomeGoods and Big Lots. Pho Viet Royal serves up spring rolls, pho, vermicelli bowls and other Vietnamese specialties from a small, unassuming storefront with a bright interior. There’s also the Borderline Restaurant, open for all-day breakfast plus lunch and dinner, locally owned and family-run for years. Sherman Street Beer Company's beer garden on the other side of the neighborhood is a breezy, welcoming spot with picnic tables and games, where patrons enjoy ales and lagers along with light fare. Residents can work off the brews at the Powerhouse Gym with a personal trainer or get a good workout in at one of the numerous sports training centers in the small industrial section.

An active community association puts on neighborhood events
"It's cool living here because it really feels like its own little community," says Sigafoos. The Midway Manor Community Association hosts events through the years that add to this feeling, including a Halloween Trunk or Treat event where kids can score candy and other goodies after parading in their costumes. Neighbors, law enforcement and businesses come together for other holiday events including an Easter Bunny visit, a holiday party featuring a visit with Santa Claus, and Memorial and Veteran Day programs.
Lehigh Valley rivalries hit the field
At the heart of the neighborhood, the Allentown City School District's Newcomer Academy serves students who have recently arrived in the United States and require additional assistance building their English language skills. Neighborhood students attend classes at Ritter Elementary School, which earns a C-minus from Niche, before moving up to Harrison-Morton Middle School across the Lehigh River, which is also rated as a C-minus school. Louis E. Dieruff High School earns a C-plus grade, and its soccer and football teams play at J. Birney Crum Stadium, the largest high school football stadium in the Mid-Atlantic – rivalry matchups like those with nearby Easton regularly pack the 15,000-capacity stadium to the gills.
J. Birney Crum Stadium is home to three Allentown-based high school football teams.
1,880 East Allentown students are taught at Dieruff High School.
