Established neighborhood in the heart of Amarillo

Settled between Interstates 27 and 40, Paramount-Mays was developed between the 1950s and 1960s. Home to Paramount-Terrace Elementary School and Paramount Park, residents have many nearby restaurants, shops, and easy access downtown and to the medical district. “I grew up in Paramount-Mays, moved back about 20 years ago, and we’ve been in the same place ever since,” says Beth Duke, a resident who is the Executive Director of City Center Amarillo. “It’s in a convenient location. I love it because I have an 8.5-minute commute to work every day. People tend to move into their house, fall in love with Paramount-Mays and never leave.”

Midcentury brick ranch and split-level homes

Brick ranch and split-level homes that range from about 1,500 to 2,500 square feet adorn tight, well-manicured lots. Shrubbery and the occasional elm tree highlight properties with fenced-in backyards, a driveway and a garage. Paramount-Mays has a small sample of townhouses and condos for those looking for maintenance-free living. Homes usually sell between $150,000 to $350,000, but sometimes a larger ranch home can cost upwards of $500,000. Investment opportunities with duplexes and multi-family homes can go from $850,000 to around $1.2 million. “Most homes were built in the 1950s and 1960s, and few have been updated," says Shane Hanes, the broker-owner with Realty One Group Oculus, who has sold homes in Paramount-Mays. "Slowly but surely, people have started to come in and flip houses."

Dual credit opportunities at Tascosa High School

Paramount-Mays is part of the Amarillo Independent School District, which rates as an A-minus on Niche and serves around 50,000 students annually. It offers a school choice program that allows parents to send their child to the school campus that fits their individual needs, even if it is not the neighborhood school. Students attend Coronado Elementary or Paramount Terrace Elementary Schools, both of which get a B-plus. Stephen F. Austin Middle School receives an A-minus grade, while Tascosa High School gets a B-plus. The high school offers dual credit opportunities through a partnership with Amarillo College.

Another schooling option is Premier High School, a charter high school in Paramount-Mays. With a small campus, it offers a private school atmosphere and is tuition-free.

Tennis matches at Paramount Park

Paramount Park is a vast open green space at the center of the community lined with trees that shade the perimeter. Locals can challenge their friends in a tennis match on one of the two hard-surfaced fenced-in courts, and young residents can play on the playground equipment with a detached swing set. Bikers can take advantage of the bike lane down Paramount Boulevard, which has a 25 MPH speed limit for vehicles.

The Wolflin Village is a small strip mall decorated with string lighting and offers locally owned boutiques like Marcella’s fashion store. Eat-Rite has been a community staple since the 1950s. It stocks organic products and has a deli counter-style restaurant. Big box stores, Walmart Supercenter, Home Depot or Burlington Coat Factory are scattered around the neighborhood. Tyler’s Barbeque is in a little red house where Olsen turns into Paramount Boulevard, and the smell of the smoker hits diners as soon as they get out of their cars. Hummers Sports Café has been open for more than 40 years, and “that parking lot is always full,” Duke says. Cellar 55 opened in 2024 and serves steak and seafood options.

Community gatherings at worship spaces and fun community events downtown

There are several places of worship nearby, including Paramount Baptist Church, which has been a community pillar since 1958. The church offers worship services in Spanish, fellowship groups and community events, including vacation bible school and cookout fundraisers. “Church is a big part of the culture in Amarillo,” Duke says. Being only 5 miles from downtown provides other entertainment with about 30 restaurants, the Amarillo Sod Poodles minor league baseball team and community events, like the High Noon on the Square summer concert series on the Potter County Courthouse lawn.

Strong winds across the Texas Panhandle

Due to consistent low pressure in the atmosphere and being a relatively open landscape, Amarillo is the windiest city in the country, averaging 12.9 MPH wind gusts. Depending on the way the wind blows, sometimes it brings the smells of neighboring cattle farms. Severe weather is a threat, with extreme heat, freezing temperatures, severe thunderstorms, tornados and flooding all possible. Paramount-Mays is not on the flood plain, but flood insurance is encouraged for Texas homebuyers by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
