Established neighborhood in the heart of Amarillo
Settled between Interstates 27 and 40, Paramount-Mays was developed between the 1950s and 1960s. Home to Paramount-Terrace Elementary School and Paramount Park, residents have many nearby restaurants, shops, and easy access downtown and to the medical district. “I grew up in Paramount-Mays, moved back about 20 years ago, and we’ve been in the same place ever since,” says Beth Duke, a resident who is the Executive Director of City Center Amarillo. “It’s in a convenient location. I love it because I have an 8.5-minute commute to work every day. People tend to move into their house, fall in love with Paramount-Mays and never leave.”

Midcentury brick ranch and split-level homes
Brick ranch and split-level homes that range from about 1,500 to 2,500 square feet adorn tight, well-manicured lots. Shrubbery and the occasional elm tree highlight properties with fenced-in backyards, a driveway and a garage. Paramount-Mays has a small sample of townhouses and condos for those looking for maintenance-free living. Homes usually sell between $150,000 to $350,000, but sometimes a larger ranch home can cost upwards of $500,000. Investment opportunities with duplexes and multi-family homes can go from $850,000 to around $1.2 million. “Most homes were built in the 1950s and 1960s, and few have been updated," says Shane Hanes, the broker-owner with Realty One Group Oculus, who has sold homes in Paramount-Mays. "Slowly but surely, people have started to come in and flip houses."

Strong winds across the Texas Panhandle
Due to consistent low pressure in the atmosphere and being a relatively open landscape, Amarillo is the windiest city in the country, averaging 12.9 MPH wind gusts. Depending on the way the wind blows, sometimes it brings the smells of neighboring cattle farms. Severe weather is a threat, with extreme heat, freezing temperatures, severe thunderstorms, tornados and flooding all possible. Paramount-Mays is not on the flood plain, but flood insurance is encouraged for Texas homebuyers by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
