A mountainous escape on the edge of Anchorage

Scenic Foothills is an Anchorage neighborhood surrounded by nature, sitting at the base of the Chugach Mountains and just north of Far North Bicentennial Park. The small residential community features homes from the mid- to late-20th century in a quiet pocket of the city. With major roads and bus routes serving the area, Scenic Foothills is convenient whether you’re commuting to downtown or Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

Established homes in a scenic part of Anchorage

Ranch-style and two-story traditional houses are some of the most common designs, and they frequently have wood siding with natural colors like blue, brown or green. Leafy trees and tall pines line the suburban streets, and many homes back up to the forest. “It’s an older, more established area, so you get a bigger yard and homes with more character,” says Christina Barron, a Realtor with Real Broker Alaska. “You get the benefit of mountain views and trails that you don’t get in other areas at this price point.” Homes typically cost between the mid-$200,000s and the mid-$500,000s. Townhouses are also common, and are priced between the mid-$200,000s and upper $300,000s.

Hike, bike or ski at neighborhood parks

Outdoor recreation is abundant in Scenic Foothills. “It’s right at the bottom of the range that’s in Anchorage, so I think a lot of people like it because you’re a little bit on the edge of town, closer to different trails,” says Kimberly Ketchum, a Realtor at Coldwell Banker Endeavor Realty. Some activities you can enjoy include:

  • Hiking or biking in the 4,000-acre Far North Bicentennial Park, just south of the neighborhood
  • Cross-country skiing or skijoring on the trails at Baxter Bog Park
  • Sledding during the winter or playing tennis during the summer at Chugach Foothills Park
  • Viewing native plants and seasonal displays at the nearby Alaska Botanical Garden

How to get involved with neighborhood events

The Scenic Foothills Community Council fosters connection by hosting events at local restaurants, volunteering at neighborhood parks and sharing community news on its social media pages. The council’s regular meetings typically take place on the first Thursday of the month at Congregation Beth Sholom. The Muldoon Library also hosts regular events, like story times and family game nights.

Be bear aware in Scenic Foothills

The location near the mountains and forest makes it likely that you’ll see wildlife in the area. Some precautions should be taken at home to prevent conflicts, such as having a bear-proof trash can or storing trash inside. All food, birdseed and anything else that can attract a bear should be out of reach. Always go with a buddy when using the trails around the neighborhood, and make noise so that any animals will hear you coming and not be startled.

I love that it is clean and there is a park nearby. Crime is getting worse though. It is very convenient though, as Fred Meyer and Target are close.
