Shopping at Diamond Center

With close proximity to ample retail options and downtown Anchorage, residents have found that living here comes with a plethora of benefits. "It's a super desirable area because it's so convenient to downtown and Anchorage's main retail centers," says Realtor Sandra Nunes with RE/MAX Dynamic Realty. In the neighborhood's southeast corner, residents shop at Diamond Center, a family-owned shopping center that features a bowling alley, ice rink and movie theater. The mall also features Anchorage market, the largest open-air market in the state. Every summer, locals visit the market to pick up fresh produce from local vendors and a quick bite from food trucks. For date night, Taku/Campbell residents grab dinner at reHARU Sushi. On weekends, many locals head to the Anchorage Brewing Company to grab fresh, frosty craft beer.

Fireworks for the 4th in Downtown Anchorage

Since there are not many community events within Taku/Campbell, Warren says that locals tend to visit adjacent neighborhoods to attend events. “There’s a firework show every 4th or July and New Year in downtown Anchorage that everybody goes to,” says Warren. Residents can also head west to Sand Lake every February to attend Jewel Lake Jamboree, a free annual ice fishing event. They can also participate in the Spring Duathlon Series, a mid-spring, family-friendly race where neighbors fight to the finish line.

The People Mover and two major highways

Public transportation is hard to access in Taku/Cambell, with the only option being Anchorage’s People Mover routes 35 and 85. Sidewalks are far and few, so many residents drive or bike to get around. The neighborhood’s central location puts it between Walter J. Hickel Parkway (also known as Minnesota Drive) and Seward Highway, two major commuting points, making it easy for locals to get to more dense areas, like Downtown Anchorage. Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is about 5 miles west of Taku/Campbell, making travel easy for locals.

I love this area of town because it is close to everything and is extremely safe and beautiful. The people are very nice and everyone is welcoming. The area is close to trailers and parks, I've lived in the diamond area since I moved to Alaska.

I never see the police. We did have a teenager that was a trouble maker and the police would come in the neighborhood to check on him years ago. I haven't seen him around and we rarely ever get cops in the neighborhood.

Everyone is great here, super friendly and out going people. I grew up here with lots of friends never having to worry about being in danger. Its a great place to live but there are better places to live. Its a small neighborhood so not a ton of people are around. I don't see this area changing much, its been the same since I was a little kids.
