Amenity-filled neighborhood near outdoor recreation
Established in the early 1980s, Woodgate is a sprawling suburban community filled with beautiful homes and friendly neighbors, just 6 miles from Aurora’s City Center. “It’s a pretty tight-knit community where neighbors interact with each other,” says Tim Roeckel, President of the Woodgate Homeowners Association. “We’re not your typical HOA. What’s cool about us is that we’re voluntary and really focused on community engagement.”

Homes come in all shapes and sizes in Woodgate, from two-bedroom condos to large estates with up to six bedrooms. Many of the properties are comprised of contemporary two-story homes with Craftsman features, such as large picture windows and brick or stone accents, and there are a handful of brick ranch-style homes as well. Properties range from 1,800 to 3,000 square feet, have attached garages and driveways and can cost between $580,000 to $850,000. There are also a few Tudor-inspired and Victorian estates dotting the neighborhood that can reach 4,500 square feet for up to $925,000. Additionally, attached townhouses and modern condos in the area typically go for $300,000 to $500,000. “There are people who are original homeowners of the neighborhood reaching retirement age, and there are also younger families that have moved in in the past 10 years or so,” Roeckel says. The entire neighborhood is separated into several subdivisions with three different homeowners associations, some of which are equipped with community-specific private parks, pools and other amenities.

Woodgate’s local and state parks
Between the neighborhood's central greenspace and the large state park next door, it’s easy to stay active in Woodgate. Sagebrush Park is the community’s main source of outdoor recreation, with its playground area, picnic shelter and walking trails. “During the summer, almost every day, there’s a volleyball net set up where people can just join games and have fun,” Roeckel says. The western side of the park is known for its gorgeous sunset views of the Front Range. On the other side of Parker Road, Cherry Creek State Park is a 4,000-acre natural area overflowing with outdoor activities. Several hiking and biking trails weave throughout the rolling hills, such as the Shop Creek Trail and the Colorado Front Range Trail. There’s also a campground for weekend excursions and an off-leash dog park. A large reservoir with beach access offers recreation on the water.

Getting the community together
Throughout the year, Woodgate’s HOA puts on several community events, from summer barbeques to holiday experiences like an Easter egg hunt or horse-drawn carriage rides for Christmas. Most of these take place in Sagebrush Park. “There are a number of cul-de-sacs where people like to congregate on their own and have parties together,” Roeckel says. These get-togethers and events contribute to the neighborhood’s friendly atmosphere.

The unique flavors of Aurora’s shopping centers
Since Woodgate is primarily residential, most shopping and dining opportunities come from strip malls along the main roads. On the other side of Chambers Road, The Angry Clover is an Irish Pub in the Shenandoah Shopping Center that serves traditional bar food and hosts live music. Harbor Plaza is at the intersection of Parker Road and Quincey Avenue; the shopping center is filled with small commercial businesses and local eateries. International restaurants like Cherry Thai Café add unique flavor to the area, while regional chains like Jet’s Pizza keep it classic. When residents want to cook a culinary masterpiece, they can head to Europa, a supermarket for European ingredients like Russian dumplings or Polish sausage. There’s also a Walmart Neighborhood Market on Smoky Hill Road for other essentials.

Traveling in and around Woodgate
Woodgate’s wide streets and sidewalks make navigating the neighborhood on foot easy. “Most evenings, regardless of the time of year, you can see people walking around and riding bikes,” Roeckel says. However, when it comes to traveling outside the area, most people have their own vehicles. Colorado State Highway 83, also known as Parker Road, makes up Woodgate’s western border and can connect commuters to Interstate 225 in the north. Those who rely on public transportation can find local bus stops along Parker Road, Chambers Road and Smoky Hill Road. Centennial Airport is only 7 miles away and offers regional charter flights.
