Windsor Park

Older ranch homes and contemporary designs
Windsor Park was first developed as a suburb at the edge of Austin in the mid-1950s and early ‘60s. Many of these original three-bedroom ranch-style homes still stand, and plenty have been thoughtfully remodeled, keeping home values high. They tend to span between 1,000 and 1,500 square feet. Plenty of newer constructions have been built, especially on the east side, taking the form of two-story homes with contemporary influences spanning 2,000 square feet. Home prices tend to hover around $600,000, plus or minus $50,000. Most of the neighborhood’s quiet, tree-shaded streets don’t have sidewalks, though they can be found, along with bike lanes, on Berkman Drive, a main artery which splits the neighborhood in half.Education and community scholarships
Blanton Elementary School is centrally located within Windsor Park, less than a mile away from most homes. Kids might then move up to Lamar Middle School before joining their peers at Northeast Early College High School. Blanton and Lamar have received A-minus ratings from Niche while Northeast has a B-minus. “The neighborhood association has offered $1,000 scholarships to graduates of our high schools,” Swenson says. “We’ve given out 83, all funded by neighborhood residents.” Graduates have used this money to attend universities across Texas and the US. Northeast High students can participate in the school’s early college program and earn a tuition-free associate degree in General Studies, dual enrolling at Austin Community College. ACC’s Highland campus is located a mile northwest of Windsor Park.Windsor Park loves parks indeed
Bartholomew District Park is a sprawling 53-acre green space in the south of Windsor Park. There are enough amenities to keep parkgoers occupied for days, from baseball diamonds to a roller derby track to an 18-hole disc golf course, the oldest currently existing course in Texas. During the dog days of summer, children can cool off at the park’s splash pad or Bartholomew Municipal Pool, which offers recreational and lap pools and two water slides. Alternatively, in the north, residents might visit the newly constructed Pomerleau Pocket Park, which features a playground and pavilion.Shops and restaurants can be found by Interstate 35
Hank’s is at the geographic heart of Windsor Park and in the hearts of many locals. This restaurant’s happy hour and California comfort food attracts visitors from across the Austin area. Bread, pasta and pastries are all made in-house. P. Terry’s Burger Stand is a popular Austin chain, and their restaurant #11 is located just off Interstate 35. Shopping destinations like Target and Dollar Tree can be found by the highway too. Residents might also shop at the H-E-B supermarket just south of East 51st Street.Traveling by bus or by car
Capital MetroBus lines 10, 20, 300 and 337 pass through Windsor Park. These routes are most accessible to residents who live on the neighborhood’s edges and take passengers directly to destinations such as Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Norwood Transit Center and downtown Austin. Interstate 35 and US Route 290 run right alongside Windsor Park’s western and northern boundaries, and US Route 183 is only a mile down the highway. By car, the airport and downtown Austin can be reached in under 20 minutes.Community-focused events
The Windsor Park Neighborhood Association throws several annual events, one such being the December Holiday Party. “It’s a chance for people to socialize, and for several years, they have given out neighborhood hero awards for people who have done unexpected and valuable things for the community,” Swenson says. Individuals have received awards in the past for publishing a list of local mental health resources and initiating a local Halloween carnival.
