A close knit community in West Baltimore

South of Lake Ashburton reservoir, Hanlon Longwood is a densely populated community in West Baltimore. “The consensus of what I always get from my clients is that the neighborhood feels like a family,” says Juwan Richardson, a Baltimore native and real estate agent with Keller Williams group. He was also honored as one of Baltimore Real Producers’ 30 under 30. “It’s a really close, tight-knit community, and they work really hard to keep it established and to keep the community together.” The average price of homes is around $180,000, which is lower than in nearby Garwyn Oaks and Forest Park. Students study within the Baltimore City Public School district, which is graded an overall C-plus on Niche. Residents gather for community events at Hanlon Park and the community garden or run a few laps around the reservoir. The city is working on beautifying the reservoir area by covering the water tanks with hopes of turning the area into a public gathering space and playground. The CAP Index scores the neighborhood an overall 5 out of 10, just a bit higher than the national average of 4. However, the score for homicide is a 9 out of 10.

Commutes downtown and the 82 city bus line

Because of its proximity to Gwynns Falls Parkway and North Hilton Street, Hanlon Longwood is conveniently located, but may suffer from high traffic noise. The 82 bus line runs from Park Circle to Reisterstown Plaza, stopping frequently on those two roads. Hanlon Longwood “is close to downtown, is super convenient, and has great access to the beltways. You can head north to Towson or south to downtown, and from there, you can take a slight detour to get to 95 and to Washington D.C.,” Richardson says. To get downtown, those who drive can head 6 miles southeast via Interstate 83. The Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is about 12 miles south via Interstate 195.

West North Avenue takeaway and shops on Clifton Avenue

The Mondawmin Mall is the nearest shopping center to Hanlon Longwood, but some locals will travel to shop at either Catonsville or Reisterstown’s much larger shopping malls and outlets. Security Square shopping mall, with dozens of familiar stores, is 5 miles west of the neighborhood, and folks can hop on Windsor Mill Road to get there in about 15 minutes. For something closer to home, residents can wander down to West North Avenue which has a few small takeaway shops. “There's a huge project in the works to revitalize the West North Avenue area, which will greatly impact the neighborhood,” Richardson says. “I was at the community development meeting on Saturday, and they broke it down for us. It’s a five-to-ten-year plan, but it will really utilize that space.” Mike’s Carryout has been in the neighborhood for a long time and is known for its famous Fish Special with special sauce. Save A Lot on Clifton Avenue is a nearby grocery store, next to a Papa John’s and the Garrison Lounge local bar.

Playing at Hanlon Park and jogging at Lake Ashburton

Hanlon Park is the largest green space in the neighborhood, which is popular for joggers and runners who like to tread laps along the reservoir’s paved path. “They’re currently renovating Hanlon Park, so it’s walkable now, but it’ll be fully walkable soon,” Richardson says. “The reservoir park where the water is also being renovated. It’ll be a nice place for families to walk and get together.” The park itself has ample room for pick-up sports games, as well as a playground for families to enjoy during nice weekends or after work. Though there isn’t a parking lot, many folks can walk from their front doors to the park in under ten minutes. Avid golfers and those with Classic Five Player cards can enjoy the Forest Park Golf Course in nearby Hillsdale Park. The Maryland Zoo is only 2 miles away and has plenty of animal species to view and educational exhibits for the whole family.

Adams Memorial Garden.
