Modest bungalows close to premier sports facilities
Sports have been bringing the Central Park community together for over 100 years. At the turn of the 20th century, the Birmingham International Raceway originally sat at the neighborhood’s far northeast corner as a 1-mile horse track. Only a few years later, the raceway became host to numerous NASCAR Cup series until it ultimately closed in 2008. Today, the dirt track sits in the shadows of a new, $46 million multi-purpose sports facility known as the Birmingham CrossPlex. Local spectators can drive over and watch NCAA Track & Field championships or cheer on the local high school swim team. While exciting sports tournaments are just around the corner, Central Park's tree-covered residential blocks begin about a half mile south of the Crossplex - just far enough to muffle the sound of cheering fans. Along with a premier athletic facility nearby, the neighborhood's pre-war bungalows and modest minimal traditional homes sit immediately east of a busy shopping and dining corridor along U.S. Route 11. From the highway, Central Park residents can head 5 miles north to explore all of the big city amenities in Downtown Birmingham.

Modest bungalows and minimal traditionals from the 1920s
Tall, leafy oaks and bright red maples look over Central Park’s narrow city blocks. Arranged in a modified grid pattern, the sidewalk-lined residential streets pass by modest bungalows and minimal traditionals dating back to the 1920s. These cozy, two-to-three-bedroom homes sit side-by-side with large front porches, close enough to have a conversation with the next-door neighbors. Throughout the community, some yards are kept well-groomed with trimmed shrubs outlining fresh-cut lawns, while others are overgrown, with leafy vines climbing up the brick exteriors. Just over half of Central Park residents own their properties, while the other 43% are renters. Listings here typically range between $75,000 and $100,000, but a few of the more updated homes can cost up to $150,000.

Bessemer Road is a bordering shopping and dining corridor
Bessemer Road is a busy shopping and dining corridor along Central Park's north border. Residents find all their everyday grocery needs at Marino's Market and head to Bama Health Foods for vitamins and other herbal medicines. Just down the street, 5 Points West Shopping City is a retail strip where locals can find casual streetwear at Cititrends or buy a new pair of shoes from Footlocker. Hungry shoppers can grab a bite from one of the national fast-food chains along the edge of the shopping center parking lot. For a more local dining experience, residents can head to Tropical Grill and order a spicy jerk chicken meal with fried plantains on the side.

Central Park and Recreation Center sits at the heart of the community
Three baseball diamonds and four fenced-in tennis courts sit in the heart of the community at the neighborhood's eponymous Central Park. While kids have Little League practice, parents can walk inside the Central Park Recreation Center for weekly Zumba classes. Indoor swim meets and volleyball tournaments occur just down the road at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Next door, AG Gaston Boys & Girls Club offers quality after-school programs where neighborhood students can receive help with homework and participate on community youth sports teams. Little ones can continue learning and sign up for the summer reading program at The Birmingham Public Library just across the street.
