A growing housing market in North Bismarck

At the edge of rural North Dakota and the activity of the state's capital, North Bismarck offers quiet suburban streets with proximity to Interstate 94 and the shopping centers of State Street. “In recent years, North Bismarck is where the majority of the city’s new developments have been popping up,” says Austin Muth, a local Realtor with Genesis Realty. “You have a bunch of different subdivisions constructed in the past 10 to 15 years, and a lot of my clients are buying their second home or looking for an upgrade with more space to raise a family.”

Modern homes with a diverse range of price tags

The streets of North Bismarck have a mix of old and new, from 1960s ranch-style homes to 21st-century modern traditional builds. With hundreds of acres of open space across the area, brand new developments are continually in the works in subdivisions like Heritage Ridge, Silver Ranch and Boulder Ridge. The smallest properties in the neighborhood sit at less than a quarter acre, while some reach over 2 acres. Manufactured homes range from $10,000 to $260,000, while condos and townhouses can go for $160,000 to $580,000. Single-family homes range from $310,000 to $850,000, with price tags increasing alongside square footage and modern upgrades.

A new elementary school and dual enrollment courses

"Due to all of the new homes on the north side of the city, a few brand-new schools have been built to keep up with demand,” Muth says. One of those newer schools is Sunrise Elementary School, which earns an A-minus grade from Niche. Simle Middle School has a B-minus grade and offers an array of elective courses, from weight training to exploring world cultures. The B-rated Legacy High School has over a dozen extracurricular student organizations and partners with Bismarck State College for its dual enrollment courses, with over 30 classes offering college credit.

Outdoor recreation through sun and snow

The North Bismarck area has a network of paved and single-track trails winding between its residential areas. The Hay Creek and Spring Creek Loop trails have over 7 miles between them and are popular among bikers and walkers alike. The trail runs past the nine-hole Pebble Creek Golf Course, which has an indoor driving range, and is open to the public. Dog owners can bring their pets to the Century Recreation Area Bark Park. In the winter months, the Bismarck area is known for its heavy snows, with an average annual snowfall of around 50 inches. However, outdoor recreation doesn’t come to a halt when the temperatures drop below freezing. The trails can be used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, while anglers can ice fish on the Missouri River and nearby lakes. “The Huff Hills Ski Area is a great winter spot for kids or first-time skiers,” says Muth. The area offers lessons, a youth ski team and 17 runs.

Shopping and dining on State Street

State Street serves as North Bismarck’s commercial corridor, lined with shopping centers, chain restaurants and local businesses. Meg-A-Latte is a local chain serving coffee, baked goods and sandwiches. “40 Steak and Seafood is a great spot for special occasions,” Muth says. “It’s a higher-end restaurant and the only surf and turf spot in town that isn’t a chain.” Charras is a popular eatery for Mexican fare, while Sickies Garage Burgers & Brews is the go-to spot for pub fare in a casual atmosphere. The Gateway Mall has businesses ranging from a craft store to an antique furniture shop. For groceries, Costco, Walmart and Cash Wise Foods are all nearby.

Bus routes and access to I-94

Bis-Man Transit operates six bus routes throughout Bismarck and the neighboring city of Mandan with stops along 43rd Avenue, Washington Street and Century Avenue. I-94 sits just south of the community and can take drivers east and west across the state to cities like Fargo and Dickinson.
