Bosque Farms & Peralta
Ranch-style homes with room for horses
Midcentury ranch-style homes here were built between the 1950s and ‘90s and range from $200,000 to $500,000. “Most homes here sit on at least an acre or more,” says Whitener, “and they’re on city water and sewer.” Common features include vinyl and earth-toned stucco exteriors with driveways leading to two-car garages or detached carports; horse owners keep barns behind their homes, while corrals sit to the side. In the southwestern end, up to four-bedroom modern ranch-style homes on 3 acres start around $800,000, while to the southeast, a few newly renovated Pueblo Revival-style homes built during the 1930s and ‘40s by Dust Bowl settlers sell around $1.1 million. Both areas sit in a floodplain, so homeowners need flood insurance if they have a federally backed mortgage.STEM career programs at Los Lunas district schools
Students may attend Los Lunas district schools like Peralta Elementary, which earns a B-grade from Niche, then continue to B-minus-rated Valencia Middle. At B-minus-rated Valencia High, students interested in pursuing STEM-related careers can join New Mexico’s Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement, Inc. (MESA) program, where they’ll go on field trips and take part in workshops.Sports and learning at the local library
Heading north, tennis and pickleball courts are found in front of the Bosque Farms Library, which also offers tap dancing and tai chi classes. During the school year, library staff provide kids with arts and crafts activities on virtual learning days, and a summer reading program; adults can attend lectures with the genealogy group, or read to service dogs on Thursdays.Green chile cheeseburgers, carne adovada and western wear
Local businesses and eateries line Bosque Farms Boulevard (Highway 47) to the east. Benny’s, a favorite for more than 30 years, showcases southwestern-themed paintings, and is known for their “Benny Burger,” a green chile cheeseburger, and deep-fried burrito with red chile. Across the street, diners enjoy authentic New Mexican fare, like the Carne Adovada Plate – pork with red chile – at family-owned Sopa’s. Head a few miles north to browse Chical Haystack’s selection of western wear and horse tack, or about 4 miles south for retail stores like Ross, before grabbing groceries at Smith’s just up the road.Fiesta activities, junior rodeo and toad races
Every October, Peralta hosts the Fiesta de Peralta y Valencia, kicking off with a parade at Town Hall, ending at the fiesta grounds near Bosque Farms Boulevard; here, hot rod, motorcycle and foreign car owners display their wheels, competing for awards. Locals can listen to live music, and kids can get their faces painted, all before a fireworks finale. In the northern end, the Bosque Farms Rodeo Association arena offers horsemanship clinics and a junior rodeo, while the first weekend in August, the Bosque Farms Community Fair offers toad races and rolling pin tosses, along with a best homemade chile contest.Houses of worship
Methodist and Catholic churches were established here in the 19th century; Methodist mission work began in the Rio Grande Valley in 1871, while during the 1860s, Our Lady of Guadalupe, a Catholic Mission, was built in Peralta. Over 100 years in existence, the church still serves Bosque Farms and Peralta residents.Cars and transport buses
Car-dependent residents can take Bosque Farms Boulevard (Highway 47) and Bosque Loop to get around, and Interstate 25 leads north to downtown Albuquerque; commute times can be up to 30 minutes. Walkable paths loop roughly a mile in every direction around the highway, and Rio Grande transport buses service both communities; the Presbyterian Hospital and the city’s main airport, Albuquerque International Sunport, are both about 18 miles north.
