Part of Bowie's old Levittown
Kenilworth was part of the Belair at Bowie community designed by Levitt Homes in the 1950s and 1960s, known as one of the most prolific homebuilders in the Postwar era. Because Kenilworth’s housing is a bit older and more established, buyers can find some of the more cost-friendly single-family homes in the city here and can reach several parks and locally loved restaurants in just minutes.
Old Bowie is mostly residential with a few locally owned shops.

Affordable 1960s era homes
Levitt Homes communities, or “Levittowns,” are seen as the prototypical American suburbs since they were first built to accommodate a nationwide demand for homes during the baby boom. Kenilworth was part of the first Levittown in the D.C. Metro area and was prized by government workers and military servicemembers who needed to live within driving distance of the nation’s capital. Many of the neighborhood’s original homes remain today, and buyers can choose between Cape Cods, bilevels, Colonial Revivals and ramblers. “The Levitt houses around here go from $400,000 to $650,000, which is considered low for the city,” says Bill Franklin, a former Bowie local and Team Leader at Bill Franklin Real Estate Group with Long & Foster Real Estate. The median single-family home price in Kenilworth is $475,000, which is 11% lower than Bowie’s median home price.

Close to swim clubs and Foxhill Park
“Kenilworth is right next to some parks and community centers, but also a few of the city’s private swim clubs are a quick drive away,” says Franklin. Foxhill Park, just north of the neighborhood, includes a playground, walking trails, ball fields and tennis courts. Just a mile north is Bowie Community Center, featuring a fitness center, basketball court and playground. Dance and yoga classes are also available here. Less than a mile west along Belair Drive, the Belair Bath & Tennis Club is a members-only center with a pool and tennis courts. The David Kerr Nature Trail is at the edge of the area and offers a forested hike close to home.

Shopping at Bowie Gateway Center and Bowie Town Center
Just south of U.S. Route 50 is the Bowie Gateway Center, a strip mall with stores like Target and Burlington. For dinner, Franklin recommends Jerry’s Seafood, an upscale restaurant less than a mile south. Jerry’s is known for its Crab Bomb, a baked lump crab entrée seasoned with Old Bay. Farther south is Bowie Town Center, the city’s premier shopping mall, with over 70 retailers, including Macy’s and Best Buy, and a Safeway for groceries.
