About Bridgeton, MO

About Bridgeton, MO

St. Louis County municipality with a complicated past

About 20 miles northwest of downtown St. Louis, Bridgeton is a self-governed municipality along the Missouri River. Though known for its complicated past with an EPA Superfund site, the community offers proximity to two interstates and an international airport — desirable features for those working in the St. Louis metropolitan area or traveling frequently. Because the airport bought the Carrollton subdivision that bordered the runways to the west, most of the residential properties in Bridgeton are east of Interstate 270 and south of the airport property. Linked together by narrow sidewalks, the community offers pedestrian-friendly access to nearby retailers and recreation spaces.

20th-century homes off Natural Bridge Road

Mature trees shade the narrow residential streets of Bridgeton, and weather-worn sidewalks run along the road’s edge. Homes with well-manicured lawns sit along the city’s many hills, most of which feature construction years from the 1960s and 1970s because of the rapid development after the city annexed several additional square miles in the 1950s. Bridgeton has many subdivisions, so architectural styles are primarily based on when the community was built. Harmann Estates features ranch-style homes with brick exteriors, while DePaul Hills includes traditional-style properties with decorative columns. Homes off Natural Bridge Road are closest to the airport, so the sound of planes overhead is a regular occurrence. Single-family homes with less than 2,000 square feet range from $175,000 to $275,000, but larger properties can cost between $300,000 and $440,000.

From Spanish Hill Park to Berry Hill Golf Course

The city of Bridgeton includes eight parks, an athletic complex and a public golf course, making it easy to get outside. Spanish Village Park features a playground and tennis courts, while Carrollton Park includes a disc golf course. For long walks through nature, the Riverwoods Park trail extends over 3 miles, though it is no longer a loop because flooding has caused closures in some areas near the river. Berry Hill Golf Course holds tournaments throughout the year, including a Chili Bowl Scramble and Parent-Child event, but the 18-hole course is also a popular destination to hit the green on the weekend. For the Fourth of July, the Bridgeton Municipal Athletic Complex hosts live music, but the facility is also open for racquetball and other sports year-round.

Finding the basics and a bite along St. Charles Rock Road

St. Charles Rock Road is the central hub for all things retail, from Walmart Supercenter to Target, all of which are near DePaul Hospital. Restaurants are concentrated around the same corridor, but some branch out closer to the airport along Natural Bridge Road. One option is El Maguey, a casual Mexican spot near the City of Bridgeton’s government buildings, and another is Sports Café, a cozy joint serving pub fare just west of Interstate 270.

Bordered by St. Louis Lambert International Airport

The MetroBus connects Bridgeton directly to the North Hanley Station, a transfer station with routes heading east toward the Mississippi River. Ramps to Interstate 70 are at the community's southern edge, providing a direct route to the area’s top attractions at Forest Park. With the St. Louis Lambert International Airport’s runways bordering the community, residents can reach the main entrance in less than 5 miles, making it easy to catch flights.

Ongoing monitoring, cleanup of Superfund site

Bridgeton’s West Lake Landfill continues to make headlines even though it's been closed for years. It includes radioactive waste — largely consisting of uranium mining residue — that was discovered in the 1970s. As the Environmental Protection Agency explained in a 2022 report, “Beginning in 1973, an estimated 8,700 tons of radiologically impacted material, or RIM, was mixed with 39,000 tons of soil and transported to the landfill.” The effects this has on the health of Bridgeton locals are being researched, and several documentaries have explored the concerns of current residents, including "Atomic Homefront." Clean-up efforts are underway, and according to the EPA report, the EPA’s West Lake Landfill Dashboard “provides status updates for 49 major components of the Remedial Design phase, as well as progress on the overall Remedial Design phase and five major Remedial Design work categories.” This dashboard is available online and is updated continuously.
