Bed-Stuy
Mexican Japanese fusion eateries join Southern soul food mainstays
Bed Stuy has a robust offering of restaurants and bars that reflect its multiculturalism. With several locations throughout the neighborhood, Peaches is a staple putting a modern spin on Southern comfort classics. “I always like the shrimp po’boy,” says Perri DeFino, a local resident and agent with Compass.Malcolm X Boulevard features unique spots like decades-old French bistro Chez Oskar and popular dive bar Turtles. Bed Stuy Fish Fry is another well-established neighborhood favorite. Brick oven pizza institution Saraghina and live music joint LunÀtico hold sway over Lewis Avenue. A recent addition to the area, FROG is a distinct yet laid-back wine bar drawing in Manhattan crowds. Commercial stretch Tompkins Avenue has an endless array of independent retailers, fusion cuisine eateries like WARUDE and trendy coffee shop Corto. The Tompkins Avenue Merchant Association organizes summer block parties.
To the south, Fulton Street is lined with grocery stores like Super Foodtown. Several big box stores and chain restaurants include Shake Shack. To the North, Broadway has a FOOD BAZAAR. A Home Depot can be found in the middle of the neighborhood.
Well-preserved single and multifamily townhomes
“The beautiful brownstone architecture with intact detailing is probably the biggest draw to the neighborhood,” says DeFino. Though rentals are prevalent, there are plenty of properties to buy as Bed-Stuy becomes an increasingly desirable place to live. Highly ornate Victorian-style brownstones are the norm and range from $1.2 million to $3.5 million, depending on size and condition. Many of these homes include separate units that can be rented out while homeowners still live on-site. Smaller postwar townhomes start at $750,000. One bedrooms in newer condo buildings and updated co-ops go for between $450,000 to $850,000. Prices tend to get higher toward the west though carefully preserved homes in the Stuyvesant Heights Historic District fetch a premium.Herbert Von King and Saratoga parks have dog runs and cultural arts centers
Breaking up the city grid, Herbert Von King Park is Bed-Stuy’s main green space and comes complete with a dog run, baseball field, outdoor fitness equipment, and an amphitheater for live shows. Its cultural art center includes a media lab. Toward the east, Saratoga Park also has a dog area and well-manicured lawns. Jackie Robinson Park and Star Spangled are among several playgrounds sprinkled throughout the neighborhood. Restoration and Marcy plazas play host to numerous community events such as the Winter Wonderland holiday market, featuring local vendors.Quality public and private schools for young families
Because of its size and large population, Bed-Stuy has numerous public, public charter and private schools. Fostering creative pursuits, Arts & Letters 305 United teaches students Pre-K to Grade 8 and has an A rating from Niche. Bedford Academy High is a public option for Grades 9 to 12, with a 100% graduation rate and an A-minus. Private schools include the Brooklyn Waldorf School and Stuyvesant Heights Montessori.Local and express trains to Manhattan and the beach
While the A express and C local Subway run beneath Fulton Street to the south, the J local and peak schedule Z express lines stop along Broadway to the north and east. In the summer, the A serves as a direct connection to Rockaway Beach and the Atlantic Ocean.
