Sunset Park
Industry City’s bustling innovation capital
Spanning 35 acres on Sunset Park’s waterfront, Industry City comprises 16 buildings built on repurposed industrial space. Formerly a manufacturing and distribution hub established in the 1890s, Bush Terminal underwent a $450 million redevelopment to support burgeoning engineering, design, manufacturing and production businesses. Today, the creative campus has over 8,500 workers across more than 550 businesses, ranging from startups and entrepreneurs to corporate enterprises with 55 plus eateries and retailers. Industry City’s shared spaces – Innovation Alley, The Courtyards and The Landing – connect the community with programming and immersive experiences across the grounds.Small businesses and one-of-a-kind food experiences, including Ends Meat
Small businesses are the lifeblood of Sunset Park. Main business corridors run along 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th Avenues, featuring niche grocery stores, big names and mom-and-pop shops that have been in business for decades. Numerous restaurants mainly focus on Asian food, like Bamboo Garden and East Harbor Seafood Place, as well as Hispanic cuisines, such as Tacos El Bronco and La Flor De Izucar Café. For those needing a trendier shopping experience, Industry City offers brand name and luxury stores, as well as unique culinary experiences in their one-of-a-kind food hall, including Ends Meat, Little Shop of Soil, Colson Patisserie, abc carpet & home outlet and NYC's first sake brewery Brooklyn Kura. For groceries, residents can pop into big names like Costco, Key Foods, C-Town or City Fresh. The last “affordable” frontier in Brooklyn
"Sunset Park is mainly residential with primarily multifamily family townhouses and some condos and co-ops sprinkled in," says Vikki. With a median sales price of $1.2 million, there's a lot of possibility for first-time buyers and those looking for a good deal. There are affordable outliers, where buyers could snatch up a studio for approximately $350,000. On the high end, for about $4 million, there are row houses with more than 10 bedrooms between 5,000 to 7,000 square feet. Most real estate resides in prewar buildings with original details such as pocket doors, tin ceilings, decorative fireplaces and crown moldings. There are a few new developments and conversions, such as 4016 7th Ave and 832 40th Street, but they tend to be small-scale projects with only a handful of units. As typical in Manhattan, the avenues are predominantly business districts, while the cross streets offer a residential neighborhood feel. The best views of Manhattan from Green-Wood Cemetary
Located in the neighborhood that bears its name, Sunset Park is a lush expense of green with an enormous Art Deco-style swimming pool, friendly pedestrian walkways, sand volleyball court and recreation center. Nearby Green-Wood Cemetary offers unobstructed views of New York Harbor, Manhattan, and the Statue of Liberty from Battle Peak – the highest natural point in Brooklyn, 216 feet above sea level. Both parks offer the community visual and performing arts programming, educational resources and even death education.19 schools, including NYU partnership school Sunset Park High
Located in District No. 15, Sunset Park is home to 19 schools, including public and private options — most located conveniently on 4th Avenue for easy access to the subway. Niche B-rated Sunset Park High School, the only NYU partnership school in Brooklyn, offers learning communities in business and entrepreneurship, health and human services and visual and performing arts. For grades pre-K through middle school, Niche B-rated PS 169 Sunset Park offers dual language enrichment programs in Spanish and Mandarin.Bus and ferry access compensate for limited subway lines
With express and local D, N and R trains, 36th Street is the only subway station in Sunset Park. During peak hours, W and Q trains serve the station. Fortunately, 10 different bus lines provide access to and from Sunset Park. For those with access to the ferry, the NYC Ferry's South Brooklyn and Rockaway routes stop at the Grand Army Plaza/Sunset Park landing.
