Planned communities center suburban luxury
In most Charlotte suburbs, development has been driven by the city’s rapidly expanding population. But in Cameron Woods, the meticulously designed community was created with beauty and leisure in mind. Nestled against the renowned Quail Hollow Club, stately Georgian Revival homes sit on sidewalk-lined streets leading to shared amenities and pockets of nature, all just a few minutes from bustling hubs like SouthPark Mall and Ballantyne’s business parks. Local Realtor Kim Raymond with Ivester Jackson fondly recalls the 10 years she lived in Seven Eagles, one of the neighborhood’s gated and guarded communities. For Raymond, the peace of mind she felt while living there was priceless. “I could call the guards and say, ‘I’m walking the dog, listen out for me!’ And if I forgot to let them know when I got home, they’d call me and ask, ‘hey, are you back home yet? Are you okay?’” Raymond says. “There’s also a huge sense of friendship within the community. So many people in the neighborhood have been there a long time; it’s not a neighborhood that flips easily.”

Classic home styles and elegant gated communities
Entering at the southern end of the neighborhood, Cameron Wood can be divided into multiple “villages” where homes vary in style and price point, but all sit along quiet, meandering streets behind tree-dotted lawns. A simple New Traditional home with vinyl siding can list for $460,000, while spacious two-story Colonial Revivals sell for upwards of $850,000. Central amenities like the Cameron Woods playground, ballfield and bocce ball courts are connected by a network of sidewalks leading to the heart of the neighborhood. In the northern part of the area lies the gated communities of Heydon Hall and Seven Eagles, where home prices start at $1 million and can climb into the $2 million range. These subdivisions feel like worlds unto themselves, where brick Georgian Revival homes sit on finely manicured lots framed by tidy hedges and gas lanterns. Elegant houses sit right next to their neighbors in Heydon Hall, though it’s possible to find more secluded properties with nearly an acre of room in Seven Eagles.

Professional golfers flock to Quail Hollow Club
Cameron Wood is front and center in May when the Quail Hollow Club hosts the annual Wells Fargo Championship on the PGA Tour. Some lucky residents can watch the top players in action right from their backyard, and South Meck students often volunteer during this exciting neighborhood event. Throughout the year, members can hone their swing on the invitation-only club’s scenic fairways during North Carolina's long outdoor seasons. “A lot of people in the neighborhood are members at Quail Hollow, and many are members at Carmel Country Club. Those are the big two,” Raymond says. She also notes that the neighborhood’s quiet nature is preserved even as people flock to Quail Hollow during its busy competitive seasons. “During the tournaments, you have to have a pass to even get on Gleneagles Road or to get into the neighborhood, which is nice. It’s very prestigious and also very safe and secure.”

Take a hike in the neighborhood’s backyard
A natural spring-fed pond at the heart of the neighborhood was where an avid angler once caught the largest smallmouth bass in North Carolina. Small streams trickle past fenced-in backyards and connect to McMullen Creek, which is surrounded by a lush greenway featuring a three-and-a-half-mile out-and-back trail. While taking a scenic hike or bike ride along the water, residents will likely cross paths with wading herons as they make their way through the quiet nature preserve’s wild wetland habitat. Following the creek further south leads to the Lower McAlpine Creek Greenway in the heart of Ballantyne.

Close to everyday needs and then some
McMullen Creek Market is residents’ one-stop shop for errands, with a Walmart Neighborhood Market, Lowe’s and US Post Office all clustered around the Parkway. Some unique local gems are also packed inside the shopping center. Los Paisas is a hotspot for traditional Colombian fare such as empanadas and plantains, while Mr. Tokyo is where sushi fans fill up on all-you-can-eat maki rolls. Trio’s back patio is perfect for sunny weekend brunch, although the bring-your-own-wine Tuesdays and rotating spring specials also make it a good choice for date night. Cameron Wood is wedged between Charlotte retail meccas like SouthPark Mall and Carolina Place Mall in Pineville, with popular boutiques about seven miles away in Ballantyne’s Blakeney Town Center. With big-box stores lining the major thoroughfares just beyond the neighborhood’s residential streets, there’s more than just everyday needs within reach.
