South Chester, a part of Pennsylvania's oldest city, Chester, has a history dating back to the 1600s. The community has manufacturing and industry roots supported by the nearby Delaware River. "What sets this community apart is that homes are relatively more affordable than the surrounding area, and you get that Delaware County feel," says Portia Thomas, a Realtor with Elite Level Realty. "The taxes are lower, more parking is available, and you see more front yards. The area has a more suburban feel than Philadelphia.."

Walking throughout the community, you'll notice several brick duplexes, twin homes and rowhouses. Old-fashioned awnings adorn some residences; newer dwellings sport vinyl siding exteriors, green lawns, and white picket fences. Established Victorian styles with turrets add a distinguished charm to the housing stock. There are also split-level houses that blend well into the sloping landscape. "First-time buyers can expect move-in ready homes to range from $140,000 to $200,000 depending on the location," Thomas says. However, potential residents can score a fixer-upper to customize their dream home for under $100,000.

The public Chester Upland School of Arts opens its doors for kindergarten to fifth graders seeking creative expression through music, visual and performing arts. Sixth graders may attend the public Toby Farms Intermediate School. The community is also home to STEM Academy at Showalter, serving seventh to twelfth-grade residents. The public school earned a C on Niche and promises to prepare enrollees for careers in engineering and other sciences. Teens may also spend their academic day at Chester High, which provides access to many educational offerings, including IT Academy, Criminal Justice Academy and CTE programs in Cosmetology, Marketing, and Culinary Arts. The community has several faith-based options, including the Institute of Islamic Studies and Fredrick Douglass Christian School.

During the summer, locals head to Veterans Memorial Park to take a dip in the community pool. During other seasons, the 21-acre green space is a gathering spot for those to enjoy recreational tennis or a quiet stroll outdoors. Others may walk along the Chester Riverwalk. Thomas says that the local government has been working on developing the riverfront for years. Recent improvements have enhanced the city's access to the river, giving residents an open invitation to explore the waterfront by boat ramps and additional green space. Some will also venture into the neighboring city of Trainer to visit Henry Johnson Park.

The community is brimming with mini markets providing convenient options to restock kitchen supplies and other household items. Thrift finds and second-hand treasures are easily sourced at South Chester Market Place, a favorite neighborhood shopping hub. Locals have ample choices for takeout and fast food. The dining scene boasts delis, bars, and seafood spots that can satisfy almost any craving. DiCostanza is a popular choice for Italian hoagies and cheesesteaks.

Many spend time at Subaru Park, a multi-use stadium for MLS matches, rugby events, and large concerts. While visiting the stadium, you're sure to see a view of Commodore Barry Bridge, leading commuters to the shores of New Jersey. Over the last three decades, the city has received investment funds to breathe new life into the parks, residences, economic development and infrastructure. One project includes Pentecostal Square, promising high-quality, affordable housing for senior residents. South Chester is a growing neighborhood that maintains its charm while continuing to expand through community-focused initiatives.
