Calumet Heights
Dutch Colonials join bungalows along gridded streets
Calumet Heights’s street grid is lined with early 1900s raised ranch-style houses, Dutch Colonials and two-story bricked prairie-style houses. Sidewalks run parallel to the fronts of these homes, with the cars parked out front, limiting the amount of front yard space. Meanwhile, backyards give enough room for personal gardens, patios or porches for picnics at home. Single-family homes list between $92,000 for a two-bedroom bungalow and roughly $400,000 for a newly remodeled four-bedroom house.National stores and locally smoked seafood
While Calumet Heights’s big box stores and fast food chains are limited to the stretch around 95th Street, local businesses are scattered north along 87th Street and Stony Island Avenue’s bus lines. Pete’s Produce, a family-based supermarket, has sold fresh produce along 87th Street since 1974. Seafood food lovers have their pick of fresh fish, whether craving Calumet Fisheries’s smoked seafood or Seafood Junction’s steamed shrimp. “I go to Calumet Fisheries all the time; fish and chips are the best thing there,” Booker says. “People get their food, go out and sit on the old picnic tables with their families, watch the boats go by or get it hot and sit in their cars.” Cruising along 95th Street, shoppers stop for groceries and errands between the Aldi in the east and Jewel-Osco to the west. As the sun sets, crowds file into Family Den to dance to the house music and sip cocktails.Teachings starting at Thomas Hoyne Elementary
Learners may start at Thomas Hoyne Fine Arts Elementary School, a Niche B-minus graded school. After the eighth grade within the Chicago Public Schools system, they may begin at Bowen High School. Bowen earns a Grade C-minus from Niche and works to prepare its students for after graduation by offering Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and American College Testing (ACT) prep courses. Students may also apply for enrollment in Chicago private schools, including St. Ailbe Catholic School in the neighborhood, which holds a 15-to-1 student-teacher ratio.Owens fitness facility and Avalon aquatics
Jesse Owens Park and Avalon Park are Calumet Heights's two major parks. While both parks provide an outdoor escape for children to run and climb on a playground, Jesse Owens includes tennis courts and an indoor fitness facility where basketball players play pickup games and fitness lovers set new personal records. Warmer weather results in increased splashing at Avalon Park’s outdoor pool. Baseball players also return to the park’s five baseball fields as the seasons change to spring and fall.Bronzeville Children’s Museum and sunbathing
Year-round, the Bronzeville Children’s Museum welcomes kids between the ages of four and nine to a day exploring the only African American children’s museum in the country. Just beyond the southern border, where this museum his housed, the Marian R. Byrner Natural Area spans 140 acres. A paved multipurpose path runs through the nature preserve, giving residents a snapshot of such endangered species as the bald eagle. Sunbathers bask in the sunshine on Calumet Beach, three miles east along Lake Michigan. Calumet Park’s almost 182 acres also include opportunities for soccer players to practice on turf fields and gymnasts to try new tricks.Chicago Skyway and Metra stations
The Chicago Skyway Toll Bridge lines the neighborhood’s eastern border, balancing out suburban walkability with quick highway access. Pace bus stops hug the grassy median along north and south running Stony Island Ave. Additional bus stops scatter along 87th Street and 95th Street, which run parallel to one another and intersect with Interstate 90 along the neighborhood's eastern edge. Just to the west, the “L” at 95th Street by Chicago State University takes passengers 12 miles north into Chicago. Advocate Trinity Hospital is in Calumet Heights’s center with two bus stops out front so hospital staff can commute and patients’ guests can visit. Residents remain connected to the action downtown, the beach to the east and activities in their neighborhood parks, as a Chicago suburb with many transportation methods.
