Quiet living arrangements, but close to activity

As the name suggests, Mount Greenwood was named for an elevated stand of trees. The neighborhood boomed when restaurants and shops grew up along 111th Street, and today the street is still known as a commercial strip. New residents then poured in from 1930 to 1950, spurring construction of homes, parks and schools. After that, the neighborhood’s population stayed fairly stable, never really breaking much past 20,000 residents. But there’s been a resurgence of interest lately, in part feeding off the popularity of neighboring Beverly. “This area is very sought after, because it has a lot of homes that are well taken care of,” says Realtor Brandon Rodriguez with Corona Homes Team. “But I would say it’s also because of great accessibility to downtown, whether you drive or take public transportation.”

Ranches, bungalows, Cape Cods and split-levels

Housing stock feels modest, with many homes offering a ranch or bungalow style living space. Even the multi-level homes fit in with the dressed-down aesthetic: split-levels, Cape Cods and other midcentury two-story properties are interspersed throughout. Homebuyers can look for sidewalks, ornamental shrubbery, small strips of front lawn and on many streets the presence of tall mature trees. Prices range from the mid $200,000s to the mid $400,000s. Some of these properties have experienced extensive interior renovation, leading to the spread in price points. Mount Greenwood exists largely as a residential grid, so strolling the streets one can see an array of brick and vinyl sided homes, occasionally mixing the two materials for a split-level. Earth tones like tan, red and slate are a theme.

A namesake park and historic cemetery

The namesake park, south centrally located, is full of athletic facilities: tennis courts, ball fields, a playground and a pool are some of the main attractions. Walking paths are spread across 50 acres, allowing the park to serve as a primary place to relax and connect in the community. The neighborhood is also surrounded by various cemeteries, in particular Saint Casimir Catholic Cemetery, which is the only Lithuanian cemetery in Chicago.

Eateries along 111th Street and in Evergreen Park

Rodriguez mentions that Mount Greenwood isn’t particularly known for shopping and dining, except for historic 111th Street, which has locally owned delis and restaurants like Bacon and Jam, a modern diner. So, most residents usually end up making a short drive for shopping and dining. “You’re not far from Evergreen Park, which borders to the north, and that has places to shop,” he says. Indeed, there’s a collection of fast-food eateries and a Jewel Osco grocery store along the border at 103rd Street and Kedzie Avenue. Just a few blocks further north is 95th Street, also known as U.S. Grant Memorial Highway, and that’s a key commercial strip that residents will use. Grocery stores, pizza places and big-box destinations like Target are all in the immediate area.

Metra stops and interstates

“As far as transportation amenities go, Mount Greenwood has Metra stops close by on the Rock Island District line, at 111th and 115th Streets,” says Rodriguez. Interstates 94 and 57 on the east end are big commuter paths for exploring the wider region. Cicero Avenue on the far west end is a commercial corridor for traveling within the immediate area. Buses are available on Pulaski Road and 111th Street, two main pathways which intersect. Otherwise, Mount Greenwood is a leafy suburban neighborhood with sidewalks that facilitate pedestrian exploration.
