Old Irving Park blends history and modern urban living
Old Irving Park prides itself on having historic charm, which it has managed to retain despite interstates and commercial pockets slicing through the area. “The homes were mostly built in the late 1800s, so there’s a lot of curb appeal and character,” says Stephanie Cutter, a Realtor at Coldwell Banker Realty. “You have the suburban lifestyle, but you also have access to the Blue Line on the Metra to get downtown.”

Historic homes mingle with new construction
Formerly an agricultural community, traces of Old Irving Park’s past are reflected in farmhouses that line the streets. Housing styles also lean toward the ornate, with plenty of Queen Anne and Victorian homes around. Some houses have been renovated, but buyers can still find a historic home with its original bones. The options are varied, with Foursquares and Italianates sharing the same block as modern new construction. A luxury afforded to locals living in Old Irving Park is the yard space, which is uncommon in many Chicago neighborhoods. “You have city living, but you can spread your elbows a little bit and not be quite as close to your neighbors,” Cutter says. “The lots are wider and deeper than others in the city.” Price points can start below $300,000 for a home needing renovations. Most homes here sell for $330,000 to $750,000. The highest-priced homes in Old Irving Park are new builds, which can exceed the $1 million mark.

Spending the day at Independence Park
Parks in neighboring communities earn daily visits from locals living in Old Irving Park. Spanning nearly 9 acres, Independence Park has a mix of indoor and outdoor recreational hotspots. When the winters become frigid, locals will still have a place to exercise at the park’s field house, which has an indoor pool, a gym and a fitness center. Mature trees provide shade for the open fields and walking trails winding through the green space. Though the park can get crowded, a large playground on a rubberized surface offers plenty of room for kids to roam. The play space sits next to four fenced-in tennis courts. Head less than 2 miles west to find Portage Park. Walk under the park’s brick entryway into the lush landscaping and jam-packed recreational hub. A stroll along paved walking paths will reveal in-line skating spots, a playground and an outdoor pool. One of Old Irving Park’s attractions has garnered national attention. Keeler Gardens, which is actually the home of a local couple, was featured on HGTV for its local flora and pollinators. The unique event space also offers creative art classes like photography and poetry.

Longtime local eateries with eccentric atmospheres
An eclectic and thriving dining scene runs through the heart of the neighborhood along Irving Park Road. Old Irving Brewery seeks to stand out from the crowd by offering ales with playful names like Shower Thoughts. Cutter also recommends Eris Cider House for drinks and Smoque, which planted roots in Old Irving Park in 2006 and quickly became a local favorite for its hearty portions of brisket and ribs. For a pick-me-up, head to Backlot Coffee. Locals feel like they’re riding the Metra at Chicago Taco Authority, which is designed like a Blue Line station. While it’s beloved for its atmosphere, locals equally rave about the tacos served with handmade tortillas. For groceries, there’s a Jewel-Osco nearby.

Ring in the seasons with community events
Old Irving Park likes to ring in the seasons with events. “It’s a tight-knit community, and the Old Irving Park Association has a gardening club and a garden walk,” Cutter says. “They have several events to meet your neighbors, which is important in a big city like Chicago.” There is an egg hunt in the spring, followed by a summer ice cream social in June. Locals gather at nearby Independence Park for fireworks and fellowship on the Fourth of July. The park is also host to a farmers market on the second and fourth Sunday of every month. Fall brings a Halloween décor contest where homes are decked out with skeletons and pumpkins. There’s also an annual Holiday Party held in December.
