A central Columbia community about a mile from Mizzou
Just a mile from Worley Street Park, the Broadway Diner serves up 'Matt's Dilemma,' a dish inspired by a regular and former University of Missouri student. Worley Street Park, like the adjacent communities, is defined by its proximity to the university, which is known by locals as Mizzou. "Central Columbia is very attractive to university employees and students," says local Realtor Sharon Bennett with RE/MAX. "The community spirit around the university is absolutely amazing. The football and basketball games are very well attended. I have season tickets to most games, myself," she says. According to Bennett, most residents are drawn to Worley Street Park because it is less than 2 miles from Mizzou and the downtown area, known as The District. However, nearby green spaces and lower-than-average home prices also add to the appeal.
An older housing market
Worley Street Park is laid out in a grid and homes here sit on modest lots and flank narrow streets where people often park their cars. Most homes in Worley Street Park were built between the '30s and '60s and reflect bungalow and ranch-styles; and while many people rent their properties, those interested in buying will find that homes typically range in price from $140,000 to upwards of $200,000. The median sales price settles in at around $160,000, which is about half of Columbia's median home price. This price difference is largely due to Worley Street Park's older housing market compared to the city's recent influx of new subdivisions. While some of these older properties have been recently updated, many still need renovation, according to Bennett. "A lot of people are definitely updating instead of selling," she says. When homes do go on the market, they sell after an average of 21 days, faster than the national average of 44 days.

Mugs Up, Shakespeare's Pizza and more
In the community's northern corridor, there's a small commercial section. It's home to Mugs Up, a drive-in eatery that opened in 1955 and is known for its chili dogs. For other dining options, Bennett suggests restaurants in The District. "Everyone associated with the university says Shakespeare's Pizza is the place to go," she says. The pizza place has been serving the community for over 50 years and has racked up a number of awards, including the 2023 'Best of Columbia' silver honor for pizza. For burgers and ice cream floats, there's the retro-style Broadway Diner. It serves up local classics like 'The Stretch,' a hashbrown and egg dish complete with various toppings. There's also 'Matt's Dilemma,' a revamped version of 'The Stretch.' Nearby, The Heidelberg has become a go-to spot for drinks out, while Acola Coffee Company has become popular for cafe fare. For groceries, there's an Aldi location less than a mile north.
