City Roots moved out, but Columbia staples remain
Welcoming and walkable, Rosewood has blossomed in the years following the development of Columbia's only inner-city urban farm. The 3-acre retreat at City Roots was the anchor of the community — where locals could stroll through gardens, enjoy farm-to-table dinners and oyster roasts with neighbors or take in the sights and sounds of the annual Mardi Gras festival. However, City Roots has since expanded on a larger plot of land outside of city limits. This sudden move hasn’t left Rosewood empty-handed. Community staples like Peebles, Rosewood Dairy Bar and Hunter-Gatherer Brewery make up for its absence, along with several walkable amenities. “There is something for everybody around here,” says Mary Lane Sloan, broker and co-owner of The Art of Real Estate. “Most neighborhoods have things in the periphery, but you can easily walk to several parks and restaurants within Rosewood.”
Hunter-Gatherer Brewery, Rosewood Dairy Bar and Rosewood Market
Hunter-Gatherer Brewery & Alehouse is known to most as “the Hangar” as it operates out of an old airport hangar. The alehouse’s observation deck is a great spot to soak up the South Carolina sunshine while sipping on a handcrafted raspberry sour. Bordering the northern part of the neighborhood is Rosewood Drive, flanked by restaurants that have been local staples for decades. There will likely be a long line outside the Rosewood Dairy Bar. It’s been an iconic Columbia institution since 1942 and is known for its smooth, sweet strawberry milkshakes. Another popular spot is 5th Avenue Deli, which serves sandwiches named after the streets of Rosewood. For more everyday needs, Publix and the local Rosewood Market are just down the street. Inside the market, fresh produce is stacked on the shelves, along with grab-and-go deli options. For additional grocery and pantry needs, locals can head to Cross Hill Market on Devine Street, which offers Whole Foods Market.

South Carolina State Fair and Saturday's Soda City
In October, the South Carolina State Fair comes to Rosewood Drive, a mile away, and attracts hundreds for a night of live music, rides and games. The same plot of land hosts two other events every May: The Rosewood Crawfish Festival and the South Carolina Food Truck and Craft Beer Festival. “Soda City is huge here,” says Rachel Shealy, a Realtor at 803 Realty. “It’s every Saturday and super dog-friendly. They shut down Main Street and line it with local vendors.” According to Shealey, the University of South Carolina football games are a huge deal, and fans often fill the Williams-Brice Stadium, even though the stadium was built to hold over 50,000 people.

Restoring Rosewood Homes
While Rosewood is mostly made up of one- and two-story brick ranchers, there’s the occasional quirky cottage with arched doorways or modern bungalows surrounded by ivy-covered fences. “Residents are almost always older couples or students renting out a property since it’s so close to campus,” Shealey says. “People over there care about the area and are now restoring their homes.” Affordability, compared to other areas in Columbia, is a major draw for homebuyers. Prices range from $250,000 to $320,000, depending on square footage and whether the property has been remodeled. However, much like the rest of the state capital, prices are continuing to climb. The LB Owens Airport is located alongside homes in Rosewood, so air traffic noise might be an issue for some.

Parks are at the heart of Rosewood
Several parks are located at the center of the neighborhood, off Airport Boulevard and Montgomery Avenue. Rosewood Park and Owens Field Park are both busy with skateboarders and bikers trying to perfect new tricks. The crack of a bat at the baseball field is designed to break down barriers for people living with disabilities and hosts the Miracle League every year. It also features 12 soccer fields and an 18-hole disc golf course. Tucked away next to that course is the whimsical Rosewood Community Orchard, where you can pick pomegranates and blackberries or relax under a mulberry tree with a book from the Little Free Library. For camping, fishing and boating, Lake Katherine and the expansive Lake Murray are 4 miles and 15 miles away, respectively.
