About Crofton, MD

About Crofton, MD

A developing suburban community south of Baltimore

Centrally located between downtown Baltimore and Washington, D.C., Crofton is known for its suburban environment and its shopping centers. “Crofton is one of the best areas in Anne Arundel County, and it’s also one of the densest,” says Realtor Lonnie Gilmore with Keller Williams Flagship of Maryland, who has 18 years of experience in the area. “They’ve done a lot of work turning it into a shopping destination in the past few years, but traffic has really picked up because of it.” Wide stretches of farmland once occupied this town of nearly 30,000 residents, which has been built up since 1963 around the Crofton Country Club and the birthplace of Johns Hopkins, the founder of the famous hospital. Today, Crofton is a high-traffic area where cul-de-sacs are common, youth sports are popular and neighbors enjoy a suburban sense of remove.

A healthy mix of historic homesteads and new construction suburbs

There is a wide variety of housing styles throughout Crofton. “You’ve got original detached houses on third- and quarter-acre lots, townhomes and over-under townhomes,” says Realtor Aidan Surlis with RE/MAX Leading Edge, a lifelong Crofton resident. “Think old-time Americana. It’s a welcoming place. You can’t go for a walk without people stopping to chat. It’s friendly and quiet.” Similar to Gambrills to the north, the median list price for homes was about $540,000 as of 2024, which is lower than nearby Crownsville and Davidsonville. Homes in traditional styles sit tucked together in cul-de-sacs, often surrounded by woods and threaded through by well-manicured golf course fairways. Large estates on the outskirts of town can rise above the $1 million mark.

Chain restaurants and trendy shopping destinations are balanced by locally owned eateries

Strip malls like the Waugh Chapel Towne Centre offer plenty of ways for residents to pick up necessities, from grocery and big-box retailers like Wegman’s and Target to fast fashion outlets like White House Black Market and Old Navy. While there are many chain restaurants, local eateries are speckled throughout the commercial centers. Molloy’s Irish Pub & Grill was opened in 2015 by co-owners Marty Brone and Colm Coyne before his passing, who were both born and raised in Ireland. Locals can enjoy fresh pizza and pasta at Nonna Angela’s Italian Bistro or can bring their laptop to Kozy Beans Coffee on quiet weekday mornings.

Commutes on Interstate 97 to Baltimore, D.C. and Annapolis

Crofton is conveniently located between three major Maryland-area cities. “Really, a big part of the draw is being in the golden triangle,” Surlis says. “You’re in the center of Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis, and it’s an easy commute to these three big areas. For dual-income households, people can work in two different cities but live in the middle.” Maryland Route 3 is the main thoroughfare, connecting residents to Interstate 97 and Baltimore to the north and to Maryland Route 50 and Washington, D.C. to the east. Anne Arundel County also operates the Crofton Express, a public bus service that runs between The Village at Waugh Chapel shopping center and Westfield Mall in Annapolis.

The Maryland Renaissance Festival draws visitors and heavy traffic to the area

The Maryland Renaissance Festival, one of the largest such events in the country, is held annually just 8 miles from Crofton at Revel Grove. The festival features numerous shows, concerts and sporting events, drawing over 300,000 visitors to the area every year and causing massive backups on local roadways. Other popular events include the Anne Arundel County Fair, held at the fairgrounds about 1 mile north of the Renaissance Festival.
