Westlake
Summer and holiday recreation at Westlake's parks
Westlake offers commanding views of the Gulf of the Farallones, and parks and beaches provide direct access to the Pacific Coast. Mussel Rock Park features 250 acres of rocky coastline, and multiple hiking trails offer scenic vistas of the ocean and expansive cliffsides. North of this park is Thornton State Beach, a 58-acre stretch of waterfront full of lush chaparral and cooled by sea breezes from May to September. The Olympic Club, just north of the neighborhood, is members-only and has numerous golf courses and a clubhouse. Westlake Park hosts one of this community’s most celebrated festivals, Frosty Fest, each December. Though usually home to tennis and fitness courts, this park transforms into a winter wonderland featuring holiday-themed baked goods, hot chocolate, over 100 holiday inflatables and visits from Santa. Plus, San Bruno Mountain State and Country Park are about 6 miles east of the neighborhood for more outdoor recreation.Rows of "Little Boxes" sit along quiet streets
Westlake is a product of San Francisco’s post-World War II suburbanization. “Westlake has a lot of more detached homes,” says local Realtor Loukia Karneris of Harper Real Estate. “It’s just a little bit more sprawled out.” Developer Henry Doelger transformed former farmland and duneland into a residential community during the 1940s and 1950s. Houses designed by Doelger Homes remain some of Westlake’s most in-demand options. “They have really good wood. They’re what’s called today mid-modern, with open spaces,” Karneris says. The majority of Westlake’s homes are split-level tract houses with average floor plans of 1,350 square feet. Because most of these homes were built by the same contractors, their uniform design even inspired a 1960s song, “Little Boxes,” referencing their compact designs. While 2-bedroom residences can sell for between $855,000 and $1.4 million, homes with more than 3 bedrooms can fetch between $1 million and $1.8 million. Westlake’s streets tend to sit at an incline, and small front lawns border sidewalks and tight driveways.Farm-fresh and fusion cuisine in Westlake
Westlake offers groceries and leisure shopping in and around the neighborhood. Westlake Shopping Center features everyday conveniences like Trader Joe’s, Safeway, Target and Walgreens. Plus, eatery Chick & Jajang is an Asian fusion restaurant known for its Korean fried chicken. Across the street from this shopping center, Original Joe’s serves up Italian classics like shrimp scampi and prime rib. The Serramonte Center, located just beyond the neighborhood’s southern end, hosts a farmers market every Thursday and Saturday, drawing more than 70 vendors on a weekly basis.A "distinguished" education in Westlake
Marjorie H. Tobias Elementary School not only ranks B by Niche but it was also named a California Distinguished School in 2023. Ben Franklin Intermediate School receives a B-minus rating and features extracurriculars like band, volleyball and soccer. The A-minus-rated Westmoor High School has a strong focus on career and technical education in fields from cosmetics to computer science.Interstate and bus access to San Francisco
Westlake and the rest of Daly City are connected to San Mateo County’s SamTrans bus service, which provides access to urban centers as far away as San Francisco and Palo Alto. Interstate 280 makes commuting into San Francisco a 10-mile journey, while Oakland is just over 20 miles up the highway. The San Francisco International Airport is 10 miles away via I-280 or I-380. The nearest hospital, the AHMC Seton Medical Center, is just 2 miles around the corner in neighboring Saint Francis.
