Resilient, culturally rich community

Once the hub of Denver's meatpacking and smelting industries through the first half of the 20th century, Elyria-Swansea is a vibrant, friendly, working-class neighborhood with a strong sense of community born from hard times and passionate activism. Despite a history of harmful industrial pollution and the construction of Interstate 70 in the 1960s, which displaced many of its residents, Elyria-Swansea neighbors remain united in protecting and improving their historic and culturally rich community. "An interesting thing about Elyria-Swansea is how hard the residents fight for their neighborhood to be treated like any other Denver neighborhood," says Ana Varela, the Elyria-Swansea neighborhood association vice president and communications director for the Globeville-Elyria-Swansea Coalition, a community group advocating for health and housing justice." Our homes are old and beautiful like other Denver neighborhoods, but our neighborhood can be overlooked." However, with active community engagement and programs like the GES Coalition's Community Land Trust, which helps people of limited means buy homes in the neighborhood, things are changing. "Anyone who moves into Elyria-Swansea, Hispanic or not, would be proud to be a part of this movement and this neighborhood's wonderful history," Varela says. According to Valera, folks will also discover a community that welcomes everyone with open arms and looks out for one another. "Elyria-Swansea has a rough surface but a very soft heart."

Vintage factory worker homes

The neighborhood retains an industrial character in much of its western half, and factory workforce housing, comprising early to mid-20th-century Craftsman bungalows, cottages, duplexes, and ranch-style homes, still makes up most of its residential inventory. Neighborhood home sizes range from around 700 to 2,500 square feet with two to four bedrooms, and prices span between $195,000 and $525,000.

Easy access to Denver destinations

With Interstate 70 and Brighton Boulevard running through the neighborhood, Elyria-Swansea residents have easy access to other destinations around Denver, including downtown, a 5-mile drive, and the Denver International Airport, 20 miles to the east. Those needing public transportation can catch a ride at the light rail station near the National Western Center, a 250-acre redevelopment project celebrating agriculture, which dominates the neighborhood's western side.

Cherished neighborhood school

Children living in Elyria-Swansea attend Denver Public Schools, including Swansea Elementary, rated a C by Niche, and Bruce Randolph Middle, which earns a C-minus. "People really do love the neighborhood school, Swansea Elementary," Valera says. "The school does a lot for the students. Many students are from low-income families, and the school is very invested in giving the kids a well-rounded experience." After Randolph, students head to C-rated Manual High, one of six district schools offering the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act Program, which provides students with opportunities to build their workforce skills in preparation for life after high school.

Locally-owned Hispanic markets and eateries

Elyria-Swansea has several small, locally-owned stores specializing in International products, including El Tepetate and La Tulense markets. For more extensive shopping trips, there's a Natural Grocers grocery store in the southwest end of the neighborhood. Folks have stopped into nearby Lucero's for homestyle Mexican breakfasts and lunches since 1962, and the Denver Stockyard Saloon, located beside the National Western Complex, is a fun spot to listen to live music while enjoying a cold beer and tasty American-Mexican fare. Varela recommends a new neighborhood eatery that locals are enjoying called Tacos El Huequito. "We lost a lot of businesses when they expanded I-70; it was a mass demolishing," Varela says. "But new businesses are expected to come."

Green space on top of the interstate

To address residents' concerns about the air quality and noise level impact of the government's plans to rebuild and expand Interstate 70, the Colorado Department of Transportation lowered the stretch of highway running through the neighborhood and built the Central-70 Cover Park on top of it. Instead of a deteriorating freeway viaduct separating the community, there are 4 acres of green space with a playground, a splash pad, two soccer fields and an amphitheater. Like Cover Park, neighbors can enjoy a playground and sports fields at Swansea Park, as well as basketball and volleyball courts, a skate park, a recreation center with an outdoor pool and a community garden.

Block parties and mega livestock shows

From summer block parties to activities for families and students at the Valdez-Perry Public Library, there's usually something happening in Elyria-Swansea. "We have tons of events," Varela says. "It just depends on what the community needs." The National Western Stock Show, a 16-day event held at the National Western Center, dubbed the Superbowl of livestock shows, is an area tradition that dates back to 1906. "There's a lot of traffic in the neighborhood when the stock show is going on," Varela says. "But there's also a lot of engagement and activities as a result, too. That's the blessing and curse of being close to an entertainment center."

I live in small town, local businesses are all around and easy to go to, stores are all around, gas stations, and much more. I'm close to everything around me, if I need something I can simply go down the street to get what I need, food and much more.
