Oak Grove offers rows of cozy brick bungalows just north of the up-and-coming Bagley district and walkable Livernois Avenue. It’s also close to Sinai-Grace Hospital, one of the largest medical centers in the city, and several local universities. “This area is really benefitting from the resurgence of Bagley and Livernois, which has been completely revamped from top to bottom as a pedestrian friendly district,” says Realtor Tim Gilson of Good Company, who’s worked all over Detroit for more than two decades. “It’s going to thrive as we see more activity and new businesses sprouting up nearby.”

This mostly residential district has sidewalks and grassy front lawns that lead to the front doors of homes that largely date back to the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Brick bungalows with 1,000-square-foot layouts are the most common home type here, although there are also some larger ranch homes available. Lot sizes are on the smaller side, around 5,000 square feet, but you’ll still have plenty of room for landscaping and gardening. Prices typically range from around $45,000 to $200,000 depending on whether the home has been renovated. The neighborhood also includes the apartment community of Sherwood Heights, for those seeking a small space.

At the center of the neighborhood, residents can enjoy the greenery of St. Martins Park, a small park that’s perfect for picnics or simply taking a stroll beneath its lush elm and oak trees. It’s the only park in the neighborhood, but locals can also walk or drive to nearby green spaces in adjacent neighborhoods like Van Antwerp Park, a sprawling space where people gather to play tennis and basketball or take the kids to the playground. The nearby Tindal Activity Center serves the community with recreation classes and indoor activities, offering a safe space for neighborhood kids to hang out with their friends.

Young students can walk or bike to Pasteur Elementary School at the northeast corner of the neighborhood. The school holds a C rating from Niche, an online school review site. Students can also attend nearby Bates Academy, a K-8 public school with a B-minus rating from Niche that offers plenty of extracurricular activities. Whether it’s orchestra, robotics, marching band or journalism, students will probably find a club or elective class to suit their interests. Upperclassmen can attend Mumford High School, which holds a C rating from Niche. Locals might also stop by the Sherwood Forest Branch of the Detroit Public Library to check out a book or use a computer. For post-secondary education, Marygrove College and University of Detroit Mercy are just a few miles south of the neighborhood.

Oak Grove is bordered in the east by Livernois, a historic corridor that was recently revitalized with wider sidewalks and easier parking. Closest to the neighborhood, residents can try the middle eastern cuisine at Bucharest Grill, while those in search of a quick breakfast or lunch might try Noni’s Sherwood Grille. For groceries, Mike’s Fresh Market is a family-run grocer that carries a variety of local and name brand products. Everyday essentials can be found at pharmacies like CVS and Rite-Aid, but residents will have to drive to get to big box stores like Walmart, The Home Depot and Target.

The neighborhood’s proximity to major roadways and access to local bus stops makes it easy to get around. Hop on nearby U.S. Route 10, and it’s about 11 miles to downtown Detroit. With brick bungalows and cozy ranchers within walking distance to local parks and schools, Oak Grove is a community worth considering in west Detroit.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
