Take a drive and spot wild horses
While tourists are known to flock to the area in the warmer months, residents of Corolla can enjoy the natural beauty and local history all year round. “The beach is super wide, and as a barrier island, we have the sound on one side and the ocean on the other,” says Wheeler. “So you can fish, go boating, drive along the beach, or just relax.” Guided tours aimed at spotting the local wild horses are popular tourist attractions, but residents can take their four-wheel drive vehicles directly down miles of pristine beach as they keep an eye out for the local Banker steeds. Those in search of some greenery can find it at nearby Duck Town Park, which features several miles of trails through beautiful maritime forest and swamp environments.
