A rural community and opportunities to grow
Dunbarton is a small town with a lot of land, which means residents can have hobby farms and houses with plenty of acreage. “Dunbarton is close to Concord, but it’s still a very rural community. It’s mostly residential with large homes and gentleman’s farms and sugar shacks,” says Susan Roemer, a Realtor with The Masiello Group with Better Homes and Gardens. Dunbarton’s small town center includes one shop, a restaurant, a church and a few government facilities, such as the town hall, the library and the fire department. Students study at the local elementary school, but then move on to the nearby town of Bow to complete their education. For those looking to own a bit more land in a pastoral setting, Dunbarton is a popular option.
Pastoral farms and a local beach, hiking and skiing trails
When it comes to getting outdoors, Dunbarton has dozens of options. Whether spending time on their own hobby farm or heading out to one of three local sugar shacks, such as Treat’s Maple Farm, residents are often involved in some form of agriculture. Stark Farm Organic Blueberries is a pick-your-own spot out on Stark Lane. There are also equestrian facilities, like Bellevue Stables and Thorberchon Farm, for boarding and riding horses.
Out on Everett Lake, “Clough State Park has a beach, fishing, and there are trails there for all-terrain vehicles, like dirt bikes or three-wheelers. It’s a nice park,” Roemer says. The state park also has plenty of picnic spots and nice views of the surrounding hills from the sandy beach.
Nature preserves and conservation areas include several hiking trails, spots to bird watch and areas to ride bikes and hike. In the winter, cross-country skiing through forested trails is popular among locals.

Historic, rural and brand-new New England homes
Because it is predominantly rural and tucked between several forests and conservation areas, Dunbarton has a wide variety of homes. Some are located on back roads that lead into the New Hampshire wilderness, while others sit closer to main roads like Route 13 or Robert Rogers Road. “Dunbarton has a lot more land than in Concord or Bow. You’ll see a lot of minimum five-acre lots, and there’s a bunch of new construction and custom houses,” Roemer says. Investment properties and cottages that have gone through major renovations can cost between $350,000 and $450,000.
Cape Cods and modernized rustic cabins, as well as brand-new traditional homes on spacious lots, may cost between $500,000 and $750,000. Homes that range between $800,000 and $1.2 million are often large estates with spacious floorplans and views of surrounding hills and forests. Popular styles here include contemporary lodges, modern farmhouses and custom ranch-style homes.

Dunbarton’s downtown scene is a small space off Route 13 with a thrift store, church and town hall. School Street Cafe is Dunbarton’s only local restaurant, and offers coffee, lunchtime sandwiches, baked goods, lemonade and salads. The local thrift store, Curios on the Common, is right across the street from the Dunbarton Public Library and the town hall. Curios is associated with the First Congregational Church of Dunbarton and has an assortment of second-hand houseware, furniture and locally made goods.
Chanticleer Gardens is a flower farm just up the road, and Eden’s Table Farm, on Stark Highway, sells fresh produce, fruit, baked goods and hand pies. Pages Country Store & Deli stocks a few essentials, but for big grocery trips, folks can head north to Concord to reach Hannaford or Market Basket. They can also drive south to the Hannaford on Mast Road near Manchester. The Blackbird Market and Deli is located in Weare.
