North Hills
Trails, playgrounds and green spaces by Chuck Henrich Memorial Park
Besides the state park anchoring the neighborhood’s west side, North Hills also has the 16-acre Chuck Henrich Memorial Park on Andrew Barcena Drive, both named after fallen police officers. “There’s lots of green space, playground equipment and picnic benches,” Vandervort says. “One of the things going for it is easy access to the mountain trailheads for biking.” North of that is Bowen Ranch, an 88,000-acre cattle ranch where Hereford cows have been grazing since the 1800s. Sandstone Ranch Park also has a small playground with a shaded picnic area, as well as 7 acres of green space used for youth sports and yard games.Stucco houses by Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard
Most of the houses in North Hills were built around the 1990s, with homes exuding brick and stucco exteriors with shingled roofs and large driveways big enough to park resident’s RVs. Residential streets are tucked away from the main roads, with dead ends and cul-de-sacs keeping traffic to a minimum, and every lawn looks different whether they’re filled with pebbles or grassy greens. Three-bedroom houses east of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard range between $170,000 and $250,000, while four-to-five-bedroom homes with multiple levels are on the west end and cost between $250,000 and $420,000.Shopping at North Hills Crossing
North Hills Crossing is located alongside U.S. Route 54 at the southernmost point of the neighborhood. Most of the dining in the shopping center are chain restaurants such as Chipotle, Panda Express and Wendy’s, but there’s also a lunch buffet at Peter Piper Pizza and shaved ice at Bahama Buck’s. Local retail includes department stores such as Ross, Marshall’s and Rack Room Shoes, while big box stores include Walmart, Big Lots and Petco. How the neighborhood shows its pride
The neighborhood pride association organizes several small events throughout the year where the community can participate. Previous events they’ve held include ice cream socials, street parades and holiday activities such as trick-or-treating or Christmas caroling.Schools named after local leaders
Two local elementary schools respectively serve the west and east sides of the community. Not to be confused with the 37th president, Nixon Elementary is named after local voting rights advocate Dr. Lawrence Nixon and earned a B-minus on Niche. Tom Lea Elementary has a robotics program and earned a B-plus, while Richardson Middle offers after-school tutoring and earned a B. Andress High School serves all of Northeast El Paso and was rated a C-plus.SunMetro stops and medical centers around U.S. Route 54
Being located right next to the highway means the neighborhood is just 12 miles from New Mexico. The highway also has multiple emergency rooms open to the community for 24 hours. SunMetro has two bus services that run through Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Sean Haggerty Drive, with routes connecting the community to El Paso Community College’s Transmountain campus 4 miles south. The El Paso International Airport is 15 miles south of the neighborhood.Environmental factors
While the neighborhood is in an ember zone, a fire station on the northwestern end is quick to respond to local emergencies. A levee prevents major flooding on the neighborhood’s west side. Some odors will eventually float into the community from the tile processing plants 8 miles northeast in Mesquite Hills.
