Fishing on the Watauga
Bill Beazell Watauga River Public Access Boat Ramp along Lovers Lane grants residents instant access to the river. Though swimming is not allowed, fishing is both permitted and a popular hobby amongst locals. According to Williams, it's common to see trout fishing guides leading trips along this stretch of the river. Similarly, kayakers pass the shores of Riverside Park a half-mile west. The park includes a playground for little ones to run loose and a section of Elizabethton Linear Path for biking and walking.Elk Avenue's shopping and dining opportunities
Sunshine Market II on Watauga Road offers daily essentials, but residents must head to Ingles Market in town for a larger grocery selection. The grocer sits along Elk Avenue and shares the stretch with retailers like Walmart Supercenter, Tractor Supply Company and several others. Trips into town can also include quick stops at one of several fast food restaurants or sitting down for a meal at Amigo Mexican Restaurant, a frequented laid-back spot.Biltmore's mid-century homes
Biltmore’s residential avenues break off from Bristol Highway, which cuts through the center of the community. Like most of Elizabethton, these narrow streets mimic the area’s mountainous terrain. As a result, mid to late-1900s ranch-style homes sit above or below the foot of their driveway. Half to full-acre lots are common, as are views of Holston Mountain in the distance and tall canopies of old-growth trees branching out from the sides and backyards of homes. These properties typically sell between $150,000 and $450,000. However, newly built homes occasionally appear on the market and can reach just below $600,000.The annual Covered Bridge Festival
Pleasant Beach Baptist Church is one of several houses of worship in the community. The church hosts an annual Fall Festival in mid-October, where attendees enjoy food trucks and the tunes of a live bluegrass band. Residents can also partake in Downtown Elizabethton’s city-wide events. “The summer is exciting,” says Maryanne Owens, a technology librarian at Elizabethton-Carter County Public Library. “We have our farmers market every Tuesday at Covered Bridge Park and the big Covered Bridge Festival in late September.” The weekend-long event also hosts live music, local vendors and activities for all ages.Getting to the Tri-Cities
Johnson City’s employers sit a 10-mile trip southwest via U.S. Route 321. Those heading to Kingsport, 32 miles northwest, reach the area using Interstate 26, while Bristol sits a 20-mile drive north along Bristol Highway. Sycamore Shoals Hospital sits closer to home, 3 miles out, alongside Elizabethtown Municipal Airport, an equal distance to the northeast. The airport services small private planes and charters. Therefore, travelers must make the 26-mile trip northwest to Tri-Cities Airport for connecting flights to major airports.Betsy Book Bus' summer initiative
Young students attend Harold McCormick Elementary School, which maintains a B-plus rating on Niche. Older students enroll at A-minus-rated T.A. Dugger Junior High School before heading to Elizabethton High School, which holds a B rating. During summer, Elizabethton City Schools’ Betsy Book Bus provides free books to students along selected routes. The district launched the initiative in 2018 to improve literacy throughout the city.
