While U.S. Highway 19E mainly follows the Doe River through the valley, the community’s residential streets branch off, rolling across the Blue Ridge foothills. Ranch-style homes mostly from the 1960s to the 1990s usually sell for more, going from the low $200,000s to the mid-$400,000s. There are also some manufactured homes here, ranging from about $100,000 to $190,000.Swimming and boating at Watauga Lake
Valley Forge is located in Northeast Tennessee, along the Blue Ridge Mountains, and several recreation areas are nearby. Watauga Lake is about 6 miles away and offers swimming, camping and boating. A portion of the Appalachian Trail passes along the shoreline. “Watauga Lake was ranked as one of the cleanest in Tennessee,” Bennett says. “If there’s a picture in your head of a beautiful mountain lake, Watauga looks like that.” On the other side of the community is the trailhead for the Tweetsie Trail. Set along a former railbed, the path travels 9 miles from Valley Forge through Elizabethton to Johnson City.Close to Elizabethton and Johnson City
U.S. Highway 19E is the main four-lane highway through Valley Forge, leading less than 3 miles north to Elizabethton. Johnson City, the region’s biggest city, is 10 miles away. Residents almost exclusively drive to their destinations, though the NET Trans system offers on-demand rides throughout Northeast Tennessee for a small fee. Used car dealers and industrial lots line U.S. Highway 19E, but a couple of shops sneak in alongside. Valley Forge Antiques opened in 2015 and often draws in collectors for its vintage finds. Wayne and Nancy Family Restaurant sits along State Line Road and serves traditional diner fare. For groceries, residents can head to the Redi Mart Supermarket 3 miles south in Hampton or the Food City 4 miles north in Elizabethton.Students can attend Carter County Schools
Carter County Schools serves Valley Forge, and students can start at Valley Forge Elementary. The school receives a B grade from Niche. Students can then move to Hampton Elementary for grades six through eight, followed by Hampton High. Both schools earn a B-minus grade. The Carter County Schools district has a robust Career and Technical Education program for its high schoolers, with Hampton High offering courses in agriculture, health sciences and automotive technology. Hampton High was damaged by Hurricane Helene in 2024 and is currently being rebuilt. For now, the school operates in a temporary facility in Elizabethton.Locals see movies at the Stateline Drive-In Theater
The Stateline Drive-In Theater is one of Valley Forge’s most popular spots through the warm months. The theater screens classic films as well as the occasional live event and draws visitors from across the region. “People come from all over,” Bennett says. “I’ve been going since I was a kid. They do kids' movies first, and then the late-night showing is a movie more for adults.”Hurricane Helene's impact on Valley Forge
In 2024, Hurricane Helene brought as much as three feet of rain to Northeast Tennessee. The storm caused flooding throughout the region, including Valley Forge, where floodwaters severely damaged the Long Hollow Road bridge over the Doe River. The bridge is currently closed as the Tennessee Department of Transportation completes repairs, causing drivers to take a longer detour en route to Elizabethton.
