Living in Valley Forge for Blue Ridge recreation
The Doe River cuts through the Blue Ridge Mountains, eventually flowing downslope into the community of Valley Forge. Sandwiched between the southern edge of Elizabethton and the mountains, Valley Forge offers lower home prices than much of the surrounding area and access to manufacturing jobs in Elizabethton and Johnson City. But its biggest draw is the nearby recreation along the Blue Ridge. “The community there is really about enjoying the outdoor beauty because there’s a lot of that nearby,” says Katy Bennett, a Realtor at Hurd Realty who grew up in the region.
Homes cost less in Valley Forge than surrounding areas
While U.S. Highway 19E mainly follows the Doe River through the valley, the community’s residential streets branch off, rolling across the Blue Ridge foothills. Homes generally cost less in Valley Forge compared to nearby areas, including the city of Elizabethton. Many homes here are bungalows dating from the 1940s and sell from the mid-$100,000s to the mid-$200,000s. Ranch-style homes mostly from the 1960s to the 1990s usually sell for more, going from the low $200,000s to the mid-$400,000s. There are also some manufactured homes here, ranging from about $100,000 to $190,000.

Valley Forge is located in Northeast Tennessee, along the Blue Ridge Mountains, and several recreation areas are nearby. Watauga Lake is about 6 miles away and offers swimming, camping and boating. A portion of the Appalachian Trail passes along the shoreline. “Watauga Lake was ranked as one of the cleanest in Tennessee,” Bennett says. “If there’s a picture in your head of a beautiful mountain lake, Watauga looks like that.” On the other side of the community is the trailhead for the Tweetsie Trail. Set along a former railbed, the path travels 9 miles from Valley Forge through Elizabethton to Johnson City.

Locals see movies at the Stateline Drive-In Theater
The Stateline Drive-In Theater is one of Valley Forge’s most popular spots through the warm months. The theater screens classic films as well as the occasional live event and draws visitors from across the region. “People come from all over,” Bennett says. “I’ve been going since I was a kid. They do kids' movies first, and then the late-night showing is a movie more for adults.”
Hurricane Helene's impact on Valley Forge
In 2024, Hurricane Helene brought as much as three feet of rain to Northeast Tennessee. The storm caused flooding throughout the region, including Valley Forge, where floodwaters severely damaged the Long Hollow Road bridge over the Doe River. The bridge is currently closed as the Tennessee Department of Transportation completes repairs, causing drivers to take a longer detour en route to Elizabethton.
