A mile across, yet so far away
It’s not even a mile by how the crow flies to the city of Harrisburg, but for residents of East Pennsboro it’s an entirely different way of life. “It’s desirable because you’re close to Harrisburg without being in the city,” says Jim Bedorf, a local real estate expert on the Bedorf-Prince Team of Coldwell Banker Realty. Growing out from the original Enola Yard, at one time the largest freight yard in the world, the township has grown from a railroad town with no stoplights to a sprawling suburban realm of green lawns and cul-de-sacs. Residents enjoy the ease of access to U.S. Routes 81 and 83, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and downtown Harrisburg, providing great opportunities for commuters as well as those who want to work locally.
Original railroad homes and modern estates
Housing across East Pennsboro is indicative of differing periods of growth for the area. “The Enola town area is a lot of duplexes and older homes, some of which were built during that railroad period,” says Bedorf, “As you go up the mountain, there are single-family homes from where you can see Harrisburg.” The homes in the original railyard area date back to the early 1900s and many still sport the fixtures of the day. These come with on-street or alley parking, and Bedorf says these typically go for $150,000 to $250,000. Through the middle of the century, winding developments filled with ranch-style, bi-level and split-level homes with carports and garages spread, sitting on modest plots of land usually around a third of an acre to an acre in size. These regularly go for $175,000 to $325,000 with many featuring upgrades like stainless steel appliances. Tucked deep into the trees at the north end of the neighborhood, those modern Traditional homes with a view – and with soaring cathedral ceilings, professional-grade kitchens, spiral staircases and formal dining rooms fetch $850,000 and up in the rare times they hit the market.
Heavy on the co-curricular activities at East Pennsboro High
East Pennsboro School District covers the entirety of East Pennsboro. Students are split between West Creek Hills and East Pennsboro Elementary school to start their school years, both of which receive a grade of C-plus from Niche. Also receiving a grade of C-plus, East Pennsboro Middle School shares a campus with East Pennsboro High School. The high school is known for having an extensive co-curricular program, going above and beyond with options including a Model United Nations and an Environment Club in addition to a marching band and a drama club, which earns the school a B-minus from Niche.
A wickedly weaving river
Conodoguinet means “A Long Way with Many Bends,” and the portion of the creek that meanders through East Pennsboro makes it obvious why. It’s the core of the parks of the township, with both Adams-Ricci Park and Ridley Park sitting along it. Ridley Park features a basketball court and a disc golf course, as well as a boat launch into the calm creek waters. The larger Adams-Ricci Park is home to local adult and youth sports leagues, with eight ball fields; over a dozen soccer fields; courts for tennis, volleyball, pickleball, and basketball; horseshoe pits; the Panther Station play structure; and picnic areas and pavilions.
From pub favorites to hidden fine dining
The squeaky wheel gets the grease – but at the Squeaky Rail, it’s not simply a greasy spoon. This long-time diner, located across from the tracks, offers breakfast all day along with casual American diner fare. Center Street Grille serves up lunch and dinner in the heart of the township, regularly fighting it out with cross-town competitor Jigsy’s Brewpub to be named the best wings in Harrisburg. Rising above the fray, Tavern on the Hill is almost hidden from view but standing out for its fine dining options that include house-cut steaks and classic steakhouse-style seafood dishes. Just west of the neighborhood, Giant Food and Weis Markets sit across from each other, competing for grocery store superiority. One of the few locally owned bookstores left, Cupboard Maker Books is home to local authors, as well as their cats. Major retail is concentrated in Capital City Mall, roughly 4 miles south of East Pennsboro.
Surprisingly, no train station
While walking and biking around East Pennsboro is great recreation, in terms of everyday life residents in the township are car dependent. For a town built around trains, there is shockingly no passenger train service. Some areas may be walkable, but for work or school four wheels are a necessity. Less than a 5 miles drive from anywhere in East Pennsboro, both UPMC West Shore and Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center provide emergency and outpatient care for the region and is a major employer. The nearest commercial airport, Harrisburg International is roughly 17 miles away, a trip that can take anywhere from 20 minutes to a half hour or so.
Fall festivals abound
Every October on the weekend before Columbus Day, East Pennsboro celebrates the Pennsboro Pumpkin Fest at Adams-Ricci Park. This event features crafts, commercial displays, food, a car show – and of course, pumpkins. Adams-Ricci is also home to a weekly Farmers Market from May through October. Just downriver, residents head to City Island and Harrisburg’s Riverfront Park for spectacles throughout the year, like the Susquehanna Valley original Kipona Fest, Fire and Ice, and the Harrisburg Holiday Parade.
Trainspotting paradise
The Enola Yard composes most of East Pennsboro’s waterfront and remains a busy transportation hub and repair station. While it’s no longer the largest in the world, it still runs thousands of tons of freight through daily. Residents soon get used to the sounds and lights that the railyard gives off, and many yard workers still live locally.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
