Sought-after for its suburban feel and city proximity
With million-dollar homes on Presque Isle Bay, a state park with beaches and bike trails, and a downtown, airport and major shopping centers nearby, the Erie neighborhood of Frontier is one of the most highly sought in the city. “It’s very desirable to business professionals and people who want to be close to city attractions and amenities,” says Jake Scheloske, vice president of sales for Agresti Real Estate, who grew up in Frontier and has been selling homes in Erie for 14 years. “Frontier is more like a suburb within a city. It’s home to Frontier Park, a famous park with tennis courts and an amphitheater where you can enjoy summer concerts. It’s one of those friendly dog walking neighborhoods that people love.”
Less than 1 square mile in size, Frontier is also within walking or biking distance of schools, restaurants, parks and recreation. “You can bike to the beaches at Presque Isle State Park,” says Realtor Fred Amendola, who leads the Fred Amendola Team with Keller Williams Realty Erie. “The Bayfront Parkway also connects you to downtown and nightlife. The largest mall is minutes away, too. Frontier has a location convenient to wherever you want to go in the area.”
Beautiful parks, marinas and beaches on Lake Erie
Frontier Park, the neighborhood’s namesake, is a 33-acre green space that hugs West Bayfront Parkway and West 8th Street. Park visitors can enjoy six tennis courts, a soccer field and multiple walking paths, many of which line either side of West Branch Cascade Creek that runs through the park. Children will find a large, sand-covered playground with a unique set of four metal slides, known as The Griff Slides, built into a natural hill. “The park has one of the best hills for sledding,” Scheloske says. Lake Erie Arboretum at Frontier Park, another part of this green space, has over 1,000 trees, an amphitheater where concerts and festivals are held, a winter garden and an open market on Saturdays from June to September, where local vendors sell crafts, baked goods, produce and flowers.
The Erie Yacht Club on Presque Isle Bay is the only private marina in Erie. It features 371 slips with custom floating catwalks, 100 dry stall spaces, boat launch ramps and a sailing program for juniors and adults. “The club is kind of hidden. You need to take Ravine Drive, a back road, to get there,” Scheloske says. “A multi-million-dollar renovation to its sailing school was completed, and it has a great restaurant and patio to enjoy the view.” The club also has a long history of yacht racing and is associated with the Inter Lake Yachting Association’s annual regatta.
Jutting out into the lake, Presque Isle State Park (often called “The Peninsula”) features several beaches, trails, ponds and incredible lake views. “Presque Isle gets 3 million visitors a year,” Amendola says. “You have the bay on one side, where you can jet ski, and the lake on the other, which the beaches face and where people boat.” The park also contains the Presque Isle Lighthouse, which dates to the 1870s and still serves as a navigational beacon for passing ships.
The Erie Yacht Club in Frontier was established in 1895.

The closer to the lake, the higher the home value
Homes along South Shore Drive with bay access have the highest value in Frontier. Front lawns on this road are deep and impeccably landscaped, and the properties, which sell from $500,000 to $1.6 million, often feature 2 or more acres and represent some of the finest examples of Tudor, colonial and Greek-revival styles in the city. “The homes in Frontier are older but filled with character and charm,” Amendola says. “You can walk or bike to the lakefront or Presque Isle State Park. It’s very close.” The rest of Frontier is laid out in evenly spaced blocks, which feature boulevards, mature shade trees and suburban homes. Colonial-style houses with brick, wood or vinyl siding are popular. They often have three or four bedrooms, formal dining rooms and extra living spaces like sunrooms. They’re priced between $250,000 and $380,000. Cape Cods with hardwood floors, fireplaces and fenced-in yards are available for $125,000 to $325,000. “All the homes in Frontier are different,” Scheloske says. “There’s nothing cookie-cutter about them. Homeowners have renovated them over the years, sometimes adding to or updating their look. It’s part of the neighborhood’s charm.”
