A historic neighborhood along the banks of Lake Michigan
Southeast Evanston is a historic neighborhood along the western shore of Lake Michigan. Its Lakeshore Historic District, which appears on the National Register of Historic Places, contains houses dating back as much as 150 years with various classical architectural influences. "The community is a warp back in time," says Patricia DeNoyer, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Commercial Realty and Evanston resident. To the east, lakefront beaches and parks support a host of recreational interests, and businesses along Chicago Avenue to the neighborhood's west provide convenient shopping and connect to downtown Evanston and Chicago.
The homes of Lakeshore Historic District
The Lakeshore Historic District stretches along the lakefront and accounts for much of the community. The district's 765 homes were built through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, showcasing an array of architectural styles with Italianate, Queen Anne, Tudor Revival and Georgian Revival being the most prominent. "They are all different, which makes it very special," DeNoyer says. "As you walk along, you can see all different kinds of architecture and design, and many residents have beautiful gardens." Homes typically sell for between $900,000 and $2 million, depending on size and condition. However, properties near or on the waterfront can reach just below $5 million. Condos with similar build dates sit along the western side and usually sell between $250,000 and $550,000. Adding to the community’s historical air are its old-growth trees, reaching higher than most homes, and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and Lake Street Church of Evanston, both of which have served the community since the mid-to-late 1800s.

Neighborhood pocket parks and Lake Michigan recreation
According to DeNoyer, the community has plenty of recreational opportunities. “There are playgrounds and tennis courts, as well as boat rentals,” she says. “There’s things that you just kind of stumble upon.” Baker Park, one of several pocket parks, has a playground, swings and a basketball court. Dawes Park’s open greenspace and Arrington Lagoon are popular spots for picnics during warmer months and accommodate ice skating in winter when the lagoon freezes. Cyclists can traverse the lakefront trail to the south alongside the sandy shores of Evanston and Lee Street Beaches, both private to Evanston Residents. Evanston Beach is a summertime swimming destination that also rents watercraft. Lee Street Beach offers views of Chicago’s skyline. The trail ends four blocks north of Calvary Catholic Cemetery, the oldest of its kind in the city. Indoor attractions include guided tours of the Charles Gates Dawes House, home of the former vice president, and McGaw YMCA, a half mile west of the neighborhood.

Main-Dempster Mile's local establishments
Along the neighborhood's western side, Main-Dempster Mile is home to restaurants and shops. The commercial district's Firehouse Grill serves American fare in a restored early 1900s firehouse. Cross-Rhodes Restaurant blends Greek and American flavors with its Greek-style fries and other offerings. Nice Lena & Friends stands out with its bright yellow exterior and sells jewelry, cards and other crafts. Trader Joe’s and Jewel-Osco are on Chicago Avenue, which also leads to Downtown Evanston just a few blocks north. Downtown’s wide sidewalks lead to restaurants and various boutiques. Larger retail options include Target, Gearhead Outfitters and World Market.

Evanston SPACE concerts and Taste of Evanston
Evanston SPACE welcomes small crowds into its intimate venue multiple times a week with local musicians and big-name acts like The Lumineers and Alabama Shakes. DeNoyer says that many lakefront events slowed down following the COVID-19 pandemic. “Most events occur in downtown Evanston and all the time during summer,” she says. Taste of Evanston is one of the most popular annual events. Held in mid-September, the event encourages attendees to spend the afternoon walking The Dawes House lawn while stopping at local brewery, winery and restaurant booths for tastings.
Southeast Evanston residents can head over to Union and Evanston SPACE for local concerts.
